"Winter Storm to Bring 5-9 Inches of Snow to Chicago Area, Officials Warn of Hazardous Driving Conditions.
A powerful winter storm is set to hit the northern Illinois region on Saturday, with forecasters predicting significant snowfall and hazardous driving conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the area from 3 a.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday, with up to 9 inches of snow expected in some areas.
According to the NWS, the worst of the storm is expected to hit Saturday morning, with a high rate of snowfall expected between noon and 8 p.m. The National Weather Service also warns that the rate of snowfall may peak at an inch per hour by Saturday afternoon.
The Chicago area is not the only region expected to be affected by the storm. Another winter system could bring additional snowfall on Monday night and Tuesday, with temperatures dipping into the single digits Sunday and Monday nights.
Illinois officials are urging travelers to prepare for hazardous driving conditions, including low visibility and slippery roads. "We are prepared and ready to devote all of our resources to the latest winter weather event," said Illinois Transportation Secretary Gia Biagi. "Please make a plan to keep you and your loved ones safe, including adjusting travel so you are not on the roads when conditions are at their worst."
To stay safe on the roads, officials recommend filling up gas tanks or charging electric vehicles, packing winter essentials like traction equipment, warm clothes, food, and water, and remaining inside the vehicle during inclement weather in case of a crash."
