A 1-year-old girl escaped serious injury after a brazen shooting in Chicago's Auburn Gresham neighborhood Wednesday afternoon. According to a police report, her mother, 26, was fatally shot while sitting in the front seat of their vehicle, sending the car careening into another SUV on South May Street at around 1:25 p.m.
The unidentified woman was pronounced dead at Little Company of Mary Medical Center after being transported with multiple gunshot wounds. Her family, however, was still notified about her passing as of press time. Her two-year-old daughter, who was riding in the backseat, showed remarkable resilience and escaped without injury, despite being exposed to gunfire.
The 27-year-old driver, who was shot in the buttocks and elbow, received treatment at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn but made a full recovery. Notably, his child's safety was safeguarded as she was taken into observation for medical evaluation after witnessing the incident.
