David Ortiz takes hard stance on Kyle Schwarber, Pete Alonso Red Sox debate

David Ortiz's Take on Schwarber and Alonso: Red Sox Legend Picks Right-Handed Power Hitter for Balance

Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz recently weighed in on the highly anticipated debate surrounding Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber and New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, two potential stars that could join the team in the offseason. According to Ortiz's stance on the "ITM Podcast," if he had to pick one, he would opt for a right-handed power hitter to complement their lineup.

Ortiz emphasized that having two left-handed power hitters, such as Schwarber and another member of the team, Roman Anthony, could lead to more matchup woes against left-handed pitching. However, adding a right-handed bat with immense power would provide a vital counterbalance and allow for better flexibility in game strategy.

The Red Sox manager's preference for Alonso over Schwarber stems from his ability to play first base and bring a much-needed right-handed bat to the lineup. This move would grant Boston more versatility in managing their infield, particularly in the early years of Alonso's next contract.

Ultimately, Ortiz believes that either slugger would be an excellent addition to the team. However, with the uncertainty surrounding Alex Bregman's free agency status, he thinks the Red Sox should prioritize securing one of these stars regardless of whether they sign Bregman or not. With their lineup already bolstered by left-handed power hitters, adding a right-handed option like Alonso would help create a more balanced and formidable team.

Ortiz's preference highlights his emphasis on strategic depth and roster flexibility in the Red Sox organization. The former Red Sox legend is known for his keen insight into team dynamics and player matchups, making his endorsement of Alonso an intriguing addition to the ongoing debate surrounding these two talented players.

im think Ortiz got a point tho 😊. balance is key when it comes to lineup construction. having too many lefty power hitters can make ur team predictable. but adding a righty with pop? that's like the icing on the cake 🍰. Alonso playin first base too is a bonus, gives u more flexibility. Ortiz right on point about prioritizin' one of these guys regardless of Bregmans free agency status 🤑. it's all about buildin a well-rounded team and makin moves that'll put u in a better position for the future 💪.

I think David Ortiz makes a solid point about needing that right-handed power hitter to balance out their lineup 🤔. I mean, having another lefty like Roman Anthony in the mix could get them into some weird matchups against lefties... it's all about strategy and depth, you know? 💡 And with Alonso being able to play first base, it would be a huge boost for the team ⚾️. Plus, having that right-handed bat would give them more options in terms of lineups and defensive shifts 🔄. Bregman's free agency status is definitely something to consider, but I think adding either Schwarber or Alonso would make the Red Sox an even more formidable team 💪.

i think david ortiz makes a pretty solid point 🤔, having a righty power hitter like alonso would definitely give the red sox some extra oomph in their lineup... and considering they already have schwartzie and roman anthony on board, it'd be nice to balance things out with an opposite handed bat 💪... but at the same time, schwarber is still a beast and would bring some much-needed depth to the team 🤯... idk what alex bregman's future holds, so maybe it's worth exploring all options before making any big decisions 🤑

idk about this tho... i mean, david ortiz makes some solid points about needing a righty power hitter to balance out the lineup. but at the same time, schwarber is still a beast and would be a great addition if they can get him on a reasonable contract. Alonso is def a consideration though, but i'm not sure he's worth giving up any of our existing lefties... plus, our bullpen has been pretty solid lately. what do you guys think? 🤔

OMG u guys I'm low-key obsessed w/ this news!!! 🤩 David Ortiz is literally the GOAT when it comes to evaluating Red Sox roster moves and I'm totally on board w/ him choosing Alonso over Schwarber 💯🔥 Alonso's ability to play 1B & bring a righty power bat to the lineup is a GAME CHANGER 🔄👍 I mean, we already have plenty of LH power hitters in the lineup w/ Ortiz & Roman Anthony so adding an RH option like Alonso would give us SO much more flexibility in game strategy 🤔💡 I think Ortiz's emphasis on strategic depth & roster flexibility is everything right now 💯👏 Can't wait to see what the Red Sox do next! 😁

idk why david ortiz thinks they need a righty power hitter, like, can't they just play schwarber in the outfield or something? 🤔 but i guess having alonso would be super helpful for infield defense, and it'd be nice to have a right-handed option just in case. Alonso's versatility is really attractive, especially with alex bregman's free agency status still up in the air. i'm curious to see how the red sox plan to fill that void if they don't sign bregman... 🤞

idk why they need 2 lefty power hitters tho... i mean dont get me wrong, schwarber & anthony r both awesome but having a righty in the mix would be so much better for them in terms of matchup woes against lhp pitching 🤔⚾️. and Alonso playing 1b is a big plus too - it would allow boston to play more flex in their lineup, which i think would be super beneficial especially when Alonso is still relatively new to the team 💡

idk why ortiz is saying this lol like its 2025 and you cant just pick one guy over another its a whole team thing 🤷‍♂️ the red sox already got a ton of lefty power hitters what do they need right handed? Alonso can play 1b which is cool but schwarber has some crazy pop too might be worth it to have both 🤔

I'm not sure why they need another power hitter but at least it's a good problem to have 🤷‍♂️. I think Ortiz has a point about needing more balance in their lineup, especially with Bregman's free agency status still uncertain. Alonso's versatility as a first baseman is a major plus, but Schwarber's ability to hit left-handed pitchers would be a nice counterbalance too ⚾️. Either way, it'll be interesting to see how the Red Sox manage their infield and game strategy next season 🤔.

Meh, I'm not buying it 🤔... David Ortiz thinks adding a righty power hitter like Alonso will help with matchup woes against left-handed pitching, but what about when they face LHP pitchers? He's just trying to justify Alonso over Schwarber... and what's with the emphasis on game strategy? Like, it's baseball, not chess 😒. And have you seen their contract numbers? It's gonna be a huge burden for the Sox to take on either of these guys 🤑.

I think Ortiz makes a point about needing balance in the lineup 🤔🏟️. It's not just about getting more power, but also having options for different situations on the field. Alonso being able to play first base is huge, it would give them so much flexibility and make their infield depth even better 💪. Plus, with guys like Anthony already on the team, adding a right-handed bat would create some nice matchup woes for opposing teams 🎯. I'm not sure about Schwarber though, I think they could still get by without him if they sign Alonso 👀
