Florida moves to ban gender-affirming care for minors

Florida's Medical Board Approves Draft Rule Banning Gender-Affirming Care for Minors, Spurring Outrage from LGBTQ+ Advocates.

A joint committee of Florida's medical boards voted in favor of a draft rule that would ban doctors from providing gender-affirming healthcare to transgender youth under the age of 18. The proposal has sparked widespread outrage among LGBTQ+ advocates and their allies.

Under the proposed rule, puberty-blocking medications and hormone treatments for minors would be prohibited, as well as gender-affirming surgery. Critics argue that these treatments are crucial in addressing the unique physical, emotional, and psychological needs of transgender youth.

"We are deeply disappointed by this vote," said Alejandra Caraballo, a legal expert who tweeted that the hearing was "stacked against trans youth from the start." Dr. Moira Szilaygi, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), also expressed her disapproval, stating that the proposed ban ignores the medical consensus and puts the well-being of transgender minors at risk.

Testimony presented during the committee hearing revealed the devastating consequences faced by many trans youth who have been denied access to these life-saving treatments. One teenager shared their harrowing experience of being rejected by their parents and forced to hide their true identity, only to later discover the importance of hormone treatment in saving their life.

The draft rule has sparked widespread criticism from medical experts, LGBTQ+ advocates, and concerned citizens, with many calling for Florida's lawmakers to reject this proposal.

"The hearing was a sham," tweeted Erin Reed, a trans rights defender. "They relied on fake experts and cut the testimony early, leaving many to not speak."

This proposed ban is part of a larger trend of laws eliminating or limiting the rights of LGBTQ+ youth in Republican-controlled states. As one progressive group tweeted, "Our votes do matter, and can impact the future of LGBTQ+ rights in Florida."

OMG this is so unfair 🀯🌈! I mean I get that there are people who disagree with gender-affirming care but to completely ban it for minors is just not right πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ. Those kids need medical help and support, they can't just magically figure out what's going on with their bodies and minds πŸ’–. It's like, we should be supporting them not restricting their access to healthcare 🀝. And the stories of trans youth who've been denied treatment are heartbreaking πŸ’”. We gotta stand up for these kids and make sure our voices are heard πŸ—£οΈ!

omg this rule r so messed up!!1! 🀯 florida is like literally trying to stifle trans kids from being their true selves. these treatments are literally lifesavers for them!!! πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ my heart goes out 2 all the trans youth who've had 2 go thru this already, it's just not right 😭

i mean what r they even thinkin bout? that these meds & surgeries r gonna ruin their lives?? nope! they're literally tryna save lives over here πŸ™Œ and yet florida's lawmakers r more concerned with "protecting" ppl from themselves lol what about protectin' them from harm 2?? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

omg what r they thinkin 🀯 this rule is straight up cruel they're literally takin away healthcare from trans kids who need it like, what's next? no access to mental health services or school bathrooms that match their identity?! its soooo sad 2 hear the testimony of those teens who were forced 2 hide themselves 4 years cuz some ppl cant handle acceptance & now they r payin the price πŸ€• this proposed ban needs 2 be rejected ASAP by fl lawmakers πŸ’”

πŸ˜žπŸ‘Ž I'm literally speechless right now... this is like something out of a nightmare! 🀯 How can they just deny trans kids the medical care they need? It's not rocket science, it's basic human compassion. Puberty-blocking meds and hormone treatments are life-saving, not experimental treatments. And what about all those testimonials from trans youth who've been through hell because they couldn't get the care they needed? πŸ€• It's heartbreaking.

And to think, this is just another example of the Republican-controlled states trying to push their agenda on vulnerable kids. Newsflash: we can't just ignore the science and the human experience here! The medical consensus is clear, and it's time our lawmakers stopped playing politics with people's lives. πŸ™„ What's next? Banning vaccines for kids who have one family member who's trans? 😑 This is an outrage, plain and simple. We need to stand up for these kids and fight this bill tooth and nail! πŸ’ͺ

I don't think this is a good idea at all πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, we're talking about minors here who might be struggling with their identity and it's not like they're asking for some crazy surgery or anything. Puberty blockers are literally just hormone treatments that slow down puberty, so it's not like they're going to grow breasts overnight πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. And hormone treatments can save lives, period πŸ’‰. It's not about letting kids do whatever they want, it's about giving them access to medical care that could make a huge difference in their lives. The fact that some experts are saying this ignores the medical consensus is wild - we're talking about doctors who specialize in pediatrics here πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. And what's next? Banning antidepressants for teenagers with depression? πŸ˜‚ This rule needs to go, and like, now 🚫.

omg this is so unfair 🀯 i cant even imagine how scary it must be for trans kids in florida having to hide who they are just because some ppl dont understand πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ like, whats wrong with giving them help when they need it? its not like its hurting anyone. and what's next gonna be a ban on puberty blockers for girls too? 🚫 that would be totally messed up. we gotta stand up for these kids and fight for their rights 🌈

Can you believe this? They're trying to tell kids they gotta hide who they are 🀣 like that's a thing we haven't seen enough of already! Puberty-blocking meds and hormone treatments for minors gettin' banned, what's next, no more Fortnite tournaments for kids with rainbow hair πŸ˜‚. I'm all for protecting kids from bad stuff, but come on, this is some messed up stuff. Trans youth just wanna be themselves without fear of bein' rejected by their own families. It's like they're tryin' to turn back the clock or somethin' πŸ•°οΈ. Let's get real, folks, we can't just ignore the science and medical consensus on this one. I mean, who wouldn't wanna help a kid figure out who they are, right? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Ugh 🀯 this is just so messed up... I mean i get where florida's got its own rules but come on!!! these kids are trying to live their lives and find some peace about who they are. hormone treatments and puberty blockers aren't just for 'being trans' it's for the kid's mental health too! πŸ€• my friend's cousin is 14 and already had to hide who she was at home because of her family... can you imagine being that scared and alone? πŸ€— we need to stand up for these kids and make sure they have access to the care they need. it's not just about 'choice' or 'family values', it's about basic human rights!!! πŸ’–

πŸ˜• I'm so worried about the well-being of trans youth in Florida right now πŸ€•. This proposed ban is like, totally out of touch with reality πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. I mean, puberty-blocking meds and hormone treatments are literally lifesavers for kids who are trying to figure out their identities 😩. We can't just erase their identities and tell them they have to live in a body that doesn't match who they are 🚫.

It's like, the medical consensus is clear: these treatments help prevent serious health issues down the line πŸ’Š. And what about the kids who get rejected by their families and are forced to hide who they are? That's some heavy emotional trauma right there πŸ’”.

I'm all for having open discussions about this stuff, but banning it altogether? Not cool 🚫. It's like we're saying that trans youth don't have a right to exist or be happy in their own skin πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. Florida's lawmakers need to think twice before pushing through something like this πŸ˜’. Our votes do matter, and let's make sure they use them to protect the rights of all kids, regardless of who they love πŸ’–.

Ugh, this rule is soooo messed up πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ! I mean, what even is the logic behind banning puberty-blocking meds and hormone treatments for trans kids? It's like they're just gonna let them suffer through puberty in silence? And don't even get me started on the part about surgery - these kids are literally fighting to survive their own bodies πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. The American Academy of Pediatrics is clearly right, this rule ignores all medical evidence and puts lives at risk. It's like, come on Florida lawmakers, do you know what you're doing? πŸ™„

πŸ€• This rule is gonna be super bad for trans kids in Florida. I mean, they're already struggling enough without being told they can't even get help with their puberty. It's like, we gotta support these kids, not make it harder for them to feel safe and accepted. The fact that the AAP and other med boards are against this is really telling - we need more people speaking out on behalf of trans youth. I'm worried about the long-term effects of denying these kids access to life-saving treatments... it's just gonna lead to more suffering and even worse outcomes down the line πŸ€•πŸ’”

omg 🀯 this is so not cool!!! i cant even believe florida is doing this... what about the well being of those kids? they need help and support, not some arbitrary rule to dictate what they can and cant do. my heart goes out to all those trans youth who have been through that trauma and are still fighting for their rights. we need to stand together as a community and make sure these kinds of laws never pass πŸ€πŸ’–

πŸ€” This whole thing reeks of an attempt to control the narrative around trans youth's health and well-being. It's like they're trying to gaslight them into thinking their bodies aren't doing what they naturally know is happening. Newsflash: puberty doesn't care about Republican or Democrat, it just happens! 🚫 The fact that medical boards are now being politicized is terrifying. What's next? Banning mental health support for LGBTQ+ youth because they don't conform to traditional societal norms? That's some serious slippery slope stuff right there. πŸ“‰ We need to stand up for the rights of these young people and demand better, more inclusive policies that prioritize their health and well-being above all else. πŸ’ͺ

I'm really worried about all these kids being denied treatment that's literally saving their lives πŸ€•. I mean, I get where the adults are coming from, but what if this is just making things worse? We're already losing so many young people to mental health issues and self-harm because of the bullying and rejection they face. Do we really want to make it harder for them to access help when they need it most? It's not about being "trans-friendly" or "left-wing", it's about basic human decency 🀝. Our kids deserve to be able to be themselves without fear of judgment or harm. Can't we just try to understand and support each other here instead of trying to dictate what's best for everyone else? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

omg what's going on with florida 🀯 i mean i know there are still lots of ppl who don't agree w/ gender-affirming care but it feels like florida is trying to shut down all options 4 trans youth 18 or under...i dont get why they would wanna do that...dont they no how messed up it can be 2 b rejected by ur own family? πŸ€• i just wish ppl could understand how important these treatments r 4 them its not like u can just take a pill & change ur body overnight lol like, puberty is a whole thing...anywayz i hope florida's lawmakers do reject this proposal πŸ’ͺ

I'm really worried about this draft rule πŸ€•. I mean, think about it - these kids are already dealing with some serious emotional stuff just because they know who they're meant to be, not even sure if their family or friends will accept them for who they are 🀝. Now we're supposed to tell them that these treatments are bad for them? It's like taking away their last lifeline πŸ’‘. And what about the parents who can't protect their kids from hate and rejection themselves? This rule is gonna hurt so many families, and it's just not fair πŸ˜”. We need to stand up for these young people and make sure they have access to the care they need πŸ‘Š.

omg this is so messed up πŸ’” fl man is literally gonna rip the autonomy of trans kids away from them just because they're young... like what even is this 18 threshold btw? who gets to decide when someone's a "minor"? it's all just so backwards and hurtful 😩 these docs are literally fighting for their lives over some meds and surgery 🀯 and florida lawmakers are just ignoring the science and medical consensus... like, can't they see that this is gonna lead to more harm than good? πŸ’€ and now the american academy of pediatrics is speaking out against it too... what's next, fl man gonna ban vaccinations for kids? πŸ’‰πŸš«

I'm so worried about these trans kids πŸ€•... my 13 year old friend is non-binary and they just got their period last month πŸ’–. If this rule passes it's gonna be a disaster for them. What if they don't know how to deal with puberty or hormone changes? They need the help from doctors, not be told what to do by politicians πŸ™„. And those testimonials are so sad... one kid said they almost took their own life because of being rejected by their parents 🀯. We gotta stand up for these kids and make sure they get the care they deserve πŸ’ͺ.

πŸ€• I'm so worried about these young trans people having to go through all this because of their identity... it's just not fair πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. Like, shouldn't doctors be able to provide help when they need it? Puberty-blocking meds and hormone treatments aren't just some 'trendy' thing, they can literally save lives πŸ’‰.

And what really gets me is that these lawmakers are like, 'we're not gonna let them live their truth', instead of being all about the science and making sure these kids get the care they need 🧬. I mean, have you seen those testimony videos from trans youth? It's heartbreaking 😭... it makes me wanna scream! Can't we just treat everyone with respect and kindness regardless of what they believe in?
