Former Met CEO named new leader of Philadelphia Art Museum

Philadelphia Art Museum Names Daniel Weiss as New Director Amid Scandal

The Philadelphia Art Museum has appointed Daniel Weiss, former president of Haverford College and CEO of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, as its new director and CEO following Sasha Suda's abrupt dismissal. Weiss is set to take office on December 1 and will oversee various aspects of the museum's operations, including curation, fundraising, programming, and strategic planning.

Weiss' tenure at the Met from 2015 to 2023 was marked by several significant challenges, including navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the museum to shut down to visitors. He also oversaw a new facilities master plan and helped stabilize the institution's finances following years of budget deficit issues under his predecessor.

Under Weiss' leadership, the Met faced criticism from some for its handling of funding and partnerships. One notable example was the decision in 2018 to make a $25 admission rate mandatory for visitors outside New York state. The move came after public pressure mounted on the institution to distance itself from the Sackler family, whose wealth is tied to Purdue Pharma.

Since leaving the Met, Weiss has returned to academia as a professor of humanities and adviser at Johns Hopkins University, where he also holds a Ph.D. He previously served as president of Lafayette College and Haverford College in Pennsylvania before taking on his roles at the Met and Hopkins.

Suda's dismissal came just months after she oversaw a rebranding effort for the museum, which included unveiling a new logo. However, controversy surrounding her leadership continued, with some accusing her of creating a toxic environment within the organization. Suda filed a lawsuit against the museum shortly after being fired, claiming that there was a "small, corrupt and unethical faction" at play.

Despite this turmoil, Weiss' appointment appears to signal a fresh start for the Philadelphia Art Museum. His contract will run through 2028, giving him significant time to stabilize the institution and implement new initiatives.

omg u guys i'm so hyped!! 🀩 phila art museum just appointed daniel weiss as their new director & CEO!!! 😍 i know he's got some baggage from his time at the met but i think he'll bring some much needed stability & fresh ideas to the table πŸ’‘ i mean, who else can say they've navigated a pandemic & budget deficits? 🀯 plus, he's already proven himself as a leader in academia & his new phd holder status is goals πŸ’β€β™€οΈ anyway, i'm excited to see what he'll bring to phila & whether the controversy surrounding suda will be just that – a thing of the past πŸ™

πŸ€” just hope they can recover from that toxic environment under Suda's leadership... 🚽 museum's getting a new boss, gotta give 'em credit for the fresh start πŸ’ͺ Weiss has some big shoes to fill, especially after navigating COVID at the Met 🌟 and now they're bringing in someone with a strong academic background πŸ‘©β€πŸŽ“ can't wait to see how this all plays out πŸ“š

πŸ€” so I'm thinkin', Daniel Weiss seems like a solid choice for the Philly Art Museum, considering his background at the Met and all. But, gotta wonder, how's he gonna tackle the whole controversy surrounding Suda's departure? 🚨 it's like, you can't just sweep under the rug, right? needs to address the toxic environment thing... might want to make some changes to that. πŸ‘₯ also, $25 admission rate was a pretty polarizing move, not sure if he'll reverse that one or not... πŸ€‘ but hey, at least he's got a Ph.D., so gotta be smart about it, right? πŸ“š

OMG, just read that the Philly Art Museum appointed Daniel Weiss as their new director 🀯! I'm not surprised though, he's been a pro in the art world for ages πŸ’Ό. But what's up with the drama surrounding Sasha Suda's exit? I mean, I get it, change can be tough πŸ”„. The whole thing about her rebranding effort and them accusing each other of being part of some "toxic environment"... yeah, that sounds pretty intense 😬.

But on a brighter note, Weiss seems like a solid choice to lead the museum forward 🌟. He's got experience from the Met (when he wasn't too busy dealing with controversy πŸ˜‰) and now he can use it to make Philly Art Museum shine πŸ’ƒ. With his contract running till 2028, I'm hoping for some major changes πŸ”₯. Let's see what kind of fresh initiatives he'll bring! πŸ‘

lol what's going on with these art museum directors lol? 🀣 first it's Suda gets fired due to some drama, and now Weiss is in charge... I mean, he seems like a solid guy, got his PhD and all that jazz from Hopkins, but dude had some major issues at the Met. Remember when they made that whole admission rate thing happen? didn't sit right with people, and it's like, who needs $25 to see art, you know? anyway, I guess Philly is hoping he can bring some stability, and good luck with that 🀞

omg u guys i just saw that daniel weiss is now the director of philly art museum lol i feel like he's got some big shoes to fill after sasha suda got fired due to all the drama 🀯 anyway, it's cool that he has a strong background in academia and also helped stabilize the met's finances during covid πŸ“ˆ but omg the admission fee thing? yeah that was kinda messed up πŸ€‘ ugh i dont wanna jinx anything but i hope he can bring some positive change to philly art museum πŸ’–

So they just appointed some new guy to fix their museum drama 🀯 Daniel Weiss comes in with a pretty sweet resume from his past roles at Haverford College and the Met πŸ“šπŸ’Ό And I guess it's good that he's got experience dealing with tough times, like during COVID-19 😷

But let me tell you, the last thing they need is more drama 🎭. Sasha Suda was already making waves with her rebranding effort, and now this guy comes in and... well, I don't know what's gonna happen yet πŸ˜…. But hey, at least he's got a solid contract to work with for the next few years πŸ‘

Ugh, great, just what we need, another " visionary leader" taking over πŸ™„... I mean, Daniel Weiss seems like a solid choice, I guess he has some decent experience under his belt πŸ‘ but it's weird how he went from being the CEO of the Met to becoming the new director at Philly Art Museum in like 2 days 🀯... anyway, good luck with the whole "fresh start" thing πŸ˜…. Can't wait to see what kind of changes he brings to the table (pun intended) πŸŽ¨πŸ’Ό. On a more serious note, it's kinda sad that Sasha Suda got let go after just rebranding the museum and all... guess you can say her time was a bit of a "work in progress" 😊.

OMG 🀯 just heard about Daniel Weiss being the new director of Philly Art Museum πŸ‘ can't wait to see what he brings to the table πŸ“ˆπŸ’Ό after all that drama with Sasha Suda 😳 hope they get things sorted out soon πŸ™ and bring back some of that old magic ✨ love how he's got a Ph.D. from Hopkins πŸŽ“ and was prof there too πŸ’‘ maybe he'll inject some new ideas into the museum πŸ€” also, $25 admission fee outside NY state πŸ€‘ yeah that was a weird decision πŸ˜‚ but hey, at least they're shaking things up πŸ”₯ fingers crossed for a smooth transition 🀞

just heard about daniel weiss being named new dir at philadelphia art museum 🀯 he's got a lot on his plate after navigating covid and budget issues at met πŸ“‰ but it sounds like he's gonna be great for philly! love that they're giving him 4 yrs to turn things around πŸ‘πŸ’ͺ suda's drama was wild tho πŸ™„ glad she's outta there πŸ’–

just heard about this πŸ€” and i gotta say, daniel weiss sounds like a pretty interesting guy... former met ceo who also had some controversy around him πŸ€‘ but hey, he's got a solid track record of navigating tough times (covid and all that) and seems to have a good understanding of how to run a big institution.

i'm curious though, what kind of vibe is weiss bringing to philly? will they be focusing on more diverse programming or just trying to revamp the whole museum experience? πŸ“šπŸ’‘

πŸ€” idk why ppl need 2 b all up in phila art museum business its just art lol what matters is da artwork not who's leading it but honestly daniel weiss seems like a solid choice considering hes got da met under his belt now hes gonna bring some stability & innovation to philly im lookin forward 2 see how he shakes things up πŸ’ΌπŸŽ¨

πŸ€” I gotta say, the Philly Art Museum is lucky to get Daniel Weiss on board! He's been through some major challenges at the Met, but he came out stronger on the other side. I mean, who else can say they navigated a global pandemic and got the institution's finances back in check? πŸ€‘ It's not like they're just handing out free art to anyone who shows up (although, let's be real, $25 might be a bit steep). But seriously, Weiss seems like a solid choice. Just hope he can bring some fresh blood to the team and shake off that toxic vibe Suda left behind πŸŽ¨πŸ’Ό

so whats going on with philly art museum? theyre appointing some new dude dan weiss as director and its all good right? πŸ€” but seriously, have you seen his track record at the met? hes navigated some tough stuff like covid pandemic and budget deficit issues... that sounds a lot like our government handling climate crisis and economic recovery lol. anyway, theres this whole thing about him making admission fee mandatory for out of state visitors which kinda reminds me of how governments try to limit access to public services... wait, or is it the other way around? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ doesnt matter who's right or wrong, point is weiss seems like a solid choice, but what if hes just trying to save face after suda got fired and all that drama?

I wonder what's gonna happen with all that controversy surrounding Sasha Suda πŸ€”πŸŽ¨. Like, how bad was it? Was she really creating a toxic environment or was it just public pressure getting to her? And now Daniel Weiss is taking over... I hope he can turn things around and make the museum an amazing space for art lovers again πŸŒŸπŸ’«.

I'm also curious about his experience leading the Met during the pandemic 🀝. Did he really help stabilize the finances and all that? It sounds like a big challenge, but he's got some impressive credentials under his belt πŸ’ΌπŸ“š. What's gonna be on his agenda for Philly now? More exhibits and events or is there something bigger planned? πŸ€”

omg, i'm so excited about daniel weiss taking over as director of philly art museum!!! 🀩 he's got some big shoes to fill after sasha suda's messy exit, but from what i've heard, he's all about bringing some fresh energy to the institution. i mean, who wouldn't want a guy with his track record at the met and haverford college leading the charge? πŸŽ¨πŸ’Ό plus, it sounds like he's got some experience navigating tough times (hello covid!) and getting the finances back on track. let's see what he brings to philly! πŸ‘

man i feel bad for sasha suda πŸ€• she was supposed to lead philly art museum to new heights but it looks like drama got in the way 😬 now dan weiss is taking over with a clean slate πŸ’ͺ hopefully he can bring some much needed stability and make the museum shine again πŸ”₯

omg u guys i just saw that daniel weiss is gonna be the new director of philly art museum 🀯 like what's going on with sasha suda tho? she got fired but then sued the museum? 😳 that sounds super weird anyway, so i guess we'll have to wait and see how things play out under weiss... he used to work at met in nyc which is kinda famous for art museums 🎨 anyway, can someone explain what a "facilities master plan" is tho? πŸ€”

I just got back from the most amazing hike in the Poconos over the weekend πŸžοΈπŸ’š. The fall foliage was insane! I saw so many beautiful trees with vibrant colors that it was like nature's own art show 🎨. Anyway, back to the museum... I'm not sure what to make of Daniel Weiss' appointment, but at least he has some experience under his belt. I mean, navigating a pandemic and all that jazz is no easy feat πŸ˜…. But have you ever tried making a good grilled cheese sandwich? It's an art form, really πŸ§€. I swear, it takes skill to get the cheese melted just right...
