Keir Starmer may be too busy to master the latest dance craze – but he needs to be on TikTok | Carys Afoko

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's lack of presence on TikTok may be down to his busy schedule, but the Labour leader needs to acknowledge the platform's influence. Despite having over 30 million users in the UK, Starmer doesn't have a personal account and rarely posts official videos from 10 Downing Street.

A review of the @UKLabour account reveals that most viral content is about a gaffe made by Starmer during a party conference speech. This raises questions about whether the Prime Minister prioritizes traditional media outlets over social media. The Conservative government's official Twitter account, however, has been active since 2018 and regularly engages with users.

Markets & Spencer recently partnered with TikTok to sell beauty products on the platform, citing its success in terms of sales and user engagement. Celebrities and influencers have taken to the red carpet for the TikTok Awards, which are streamed live on the app.

The article suggests that politicians need to adapt to changing consumer behavior. With 25% of Britons planning to buy Christmas goods online, social media platforms like TikTok are becoming increasingly important for retailers. Brands are investing heavily in influencer marketing, with Unilever announcing a significant increase in its social media ad spend.

Politicians who are familiar with the platform and produce engaging content have seen success. Reform, a think tank, has a "studio" to record rapid-reaction videos on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. Labour's Digital ID card plans were met with more views than expected after being promoted on the platforms.

The rise of vertical video is driven by users' desire for authentic and accessible content. The politicians who are embracing this trend understand its significance in shaping the communications landscape. As social media continues to play a vital role in how we consume information, Labour must ensure that its message resonates with younger voters and stays ahead of the curve on platforms like TikTok.

🤔 I mean, what's up with Keir Starmer not having a TikTok account? Like, is he really too busy to create some viral content or something? 🙄 30 million users in the UK and still no personal account? That's like being on the red carpet at the Oscars without getting a selfie taken... 📸. And don't even get me started on the @UKLabour account - most of the virals are about Starmer's gaffes 😂. I guess he's just not "influencer material"... yet? 🤷‍♀️

🤔 so i think its kinda weird that labours leader isnt on tiktok - theres like 30 million people in the uk who use it and hes missing out on a major way to connect with young ppl 📈 but at the same time, im not surprised hes busy w/ other stuff. i mean, 10 downing street isnt exactly a relaxed work environment 😬 plus, tiktok is all about short-form vids which might not be the best fit for labours kinda messaging 🤷‍♀️ but still, they need to find ways to reach out to the younger crowd - maybe collab w/ popular uk influencers or somethin' 👍

🤔 you know what's wild? I was at this tiny thrift store last weekend and they had this old Nintendo 64 console for sale 🎮 it was like $50! I ended up buying it just because I wanted to try out the N64 again, and now I'm totally nostalgic. 😆 anyway, back to Starmer on TikTok... i mean, can you imagine if he actually joined the platform? it'd be kinda funny seeing him trying to go viral with those awkward dance moves 🤣 but seriously, i think Labour needs to get on that bandwagon ASAP. social media is where it's at these days! 💻

I feel like politics is totally behind the times rn 🤦‍♂️. I mean, Keir Starmer's not even on TikTok? That's like being in a foreign country when everyone else is on the same continent 😂. It's all about adaptability and being relevant to the younger crowd. Labour needs to jump on this TikTok bandwagon ASAP or risk getting left behind 💸.

And can you believe @UKLabour doesn't even have the most viral content from their own leader? 🤯 That says a lot about how they're managing their social media game. I mean, I've seen more engagement with Labour's Digital ID card plans on TikTok than at actual party conferences 🚫. It's all about being authentic and accessible, fam 👍.

The thing is, politicians need to catch up with the times and get comfortable with the idea of being goofy on social media 🤪. It's not just about being serious all the time; it's about showing people you're human too 💕. And trust me, if they don't step up their TikTok game, those 25% of Britons planning to buy Christmas goods online are gonna find someone else who does 😂.

I feel like UK politics needs a major refresh, lol! 🤣 I mean, Keir Starmer's team should be all over TikTok if they want to win over those young voters, fam! 😂 30 million users in the UK and he still doesn't have an account? That's like being a celeb who hasn't Instagrammed since their debut pic. 🤦‍♂️

But seriously though, social media is where it's at now. Those Conservative folk are killing it on Twitter. And let's be real, Labour needs to up its game if they wanna stay relevant. Mark Zuckerberg might've started Facebook, but the next big thing might just be TikTok 🤑

lololol what's up with Keir Starmer not havin' a TikTok? like, he's the leader of the opposition but can't even get a fave account 🤣. And yeah, Labour's @UKLabour is all about Starmer's gaffes lol. I think it's cool that Markets & Spencer is sellin' beauty products on TikTok tho 🛍️. The Tories are killin' it on Twitter btw, they need to step up their game 👀. But for real tho, politicians gotta get with the times, especially when 25% of Brits are buyin' Christmas gifts online 🎁📦

So Keir Starmer doesn't wanna be on TikTok because he's too busy... yeah right 🙄. I mean, come on, it's not like he's too old for this sorta thing. His party's got over 30 million users in the UK and they're all dying to see their leader's face on the app. What's up with that? 🤔

🤔 think labours gonna have to step up their game if they wanna compete with the cons on tiktok 😬 starmer's not doin himself any favours by bein all formal and stiff in his vids 📹 but its def possible for him to make it more relatable & funnier lol remember when joe biden did that one funny dance at a event? 🕺 that kinda thing could work for starmer 👍 and btw 25% of britons buyin christmas goods online is no joke! tiktok's got some serious influence 👀

I'm thinking, what's the point of having all those users if you're not gonna be present on their favorite platform? 🤔 Like, I remember when Twitter was first coming up and Obama used it to connect with people... now it's everyone's go-to place for news and stuff. And TikTok is like a whole different vibe - those dances and whatnot are just so catchy!

I mean, Labour needs to step up its game and get some of that TikTok magic for themselves. It's not just about having an account, though - it's about putting out content that resonates with the youth. I'm reading this one article where they say 25% of Brits are shopping online for Christmas... that's like a whole generation of people!

But you know what? My grandma still doesn't use social media... she gets her news from actual newspapers and whatnot. And my parents, they're all about Facebook - they love sharing their grandkids' birthdays on there 🎉 But anyway, back to Labour... they need to get with the times or risk getting left behind in the digital age

I think it's crazy that our PM isn't even on TikTok 🤯... I mean, what's up with that? Labour needs to get with the times and engage with younger voters who are already glued to these platforms. It's not just about being present, but also producing content that resonates with them. The fact that @UKLabour is struggling to go viral shows how out of touch they're being. Unilever is already putting a ton of money into social media ads, and our politicians need to adapt or get left behind 📈

OMG you guys I'm literally dying over here 🤯 Starmer needs to get on TikTok ASAP!!! Like seriously 30 million users and no personal account?!?! It's all about the Labours gaffs being shared left right and centre on the platform 🤦‍♂️ Meanwhile, PM Boris is out here crushing it on Twitter 📈 And don't even get me started on those TikTok Awards - I'm low-key obsessed 🎉 If Labour wants to compete with the likes of Unilever who's investing BIG in influencer marketing, they need to step up their social media game! 🚀 The fact that Reform is killing it with rapid-reaction vids is giving me LIFE 💥 We need more politicians like Starmer embracing vertical video and creating authentic content for our feeds 📹👍

🤦‍♂️ I mean, come on Keir Starmer can't be that busy he's avoiding TikTok? 📱 It's just a platform, not a black hole consuming his soul. But seriously though, Labour needs to get with the times and acknowledge its influence, especially since most of their content goes viral from one Starmer gaffe or another 🤣. On the other hand, it's interesting to see how Conservative politicians are more active on social media and engaging with users... maybe they're just trying to be relevant? 🤷‍♂️ Anyway, I think Labour needs to step up its TikTok game if they want to stay ahead of the curve and reach younger voters.
