NYPD Commissioner Tisch accepts Mamdani’s job offer, but they don’t ‘agree on everything’

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch has accepted a job offer from incoming Mayor Zohran Mamdani, but despite their shared goals, there are areas where they don't see eye to eye. In statements announcing the appointment, both Tisch and Mamdani emphasized the importance of lowering crime rates and fighting corruption within the NYPD.

However, in a message to department members, Tisch acknowledged that she doesn't share her new boss's views on every issue. "The reason I have chosen to stay is you," she wrote. "Now, do the Mayor-elect and I agree on everything? No, we don't." This sentiment was echoed by Mamdani in a phone interview after the announcement, where he stated that disagreements are not only reconcilable but also a sign of a healthy partnership.

One area of disagreement appears to be bail reform. Tisch has been an outspoken critic of New York state's reforms, which she believes contributed to the city's spike in crime during the COVID-19 pandemic. In contrast, Mamdani expressed support for the reforms and their importance in addressing social injustices.

Another point of contention is policing of protests. Tisch has overseen increased quality of life enforcement by the NYPD, which includes responding to minor offenses like noise complaints and double parking. This approach has drawn criticism from criminal justice reform advocates, who argue that such efforts can lead to further marginalization of already vulnerable communities.

Mamdani's proposal for a Department of Community Safety, which would send mental health professionals to help New Yorkers in distress, also raises questions about how it will interact with the NYPD. While both Tisch and Mamdani stated that they want to ensure collaboration between the two entities, critics remain skeptical about the potential for further entanglement of law enforcement with social services.

The Police Benevolent Association welcomed the appointment of a stable and experienced leader in Tisch, citing her understanding of the challenges faced by police officers. Despite their differences, both Tisch and Mamdani appear committed to finding common ground and working towards a shared vision for public safety.

🤔 I'm a bit concerned about this new development. As someone who's followed Jessica Tisch's work with NYPD, it's interesting that she'd criticize the state's bail reform but then accept a role under Mamdani, who supports those reforms. It seems like a contradiction to me. What's more, I don't think policing of protests is the right approach - what about all the times police have been criticized for their treatment of protesters? Maybe we need to rethink our approach to community safety instead?

But hey, at least Tisch is staying on, which is great news! She seems like a pro who actually understands the challenges faced by officers. Fingers crossed that Mamdani and Tisch can find common ground and make real changes for NYC's communities 🙏

idk why ppl think tisch & mamdani can't work together tho 🤔 they both seem genuine about their goals for the city... plus she got elected by the people lol 😂 anyway, bail reform is super important especially when it comes to vulnerable communities like low-income folks & people of color 🌎💪 what's worse, policing protests or addressing actual social issues? 💯

🤔 I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole thing... remember when we used to have a mayor like Zohran? He's got some big shoes to fill, especially with Tisch coming on board. I mean, she was the one who was always saying we need more cops on the beat, and now she's got to deal with the fallout of all those community policing initiatives. Bail reform is a real mess - I recall when they first passed it back in 2019... it seemed like a good idea at the time, but hindsight is 20/20, right? 🙄

🤔 I'm glad Tisch is staying on as commissioner, she's definitely been doing some good work in her current role. But, gotta be real, I'm worried about bail reform under Mamdani's leadership... I get why he wants to address social injustices, but how are we gonna balance that with keeping our streets safe? And policing of protests is a whole other can of worms - I feel like we're still trying to figure out the best way to handle those situations without unfairly targeting certain communities. The idea of a Department of Community Safety sounds cool, but it's hard to see how it'll actually work in practice... fingers crossed that Tisch and Mamdani can make it happen! 💡

man... I don't know about this new bail reform stuff 🤔... Tisch is all like "crime's outta control" but then she's got the nerve to criticize the state's reforms? 🙄 Meanwhile, Mamdani's all about being supportive of those reforms and trying to address social injustices... it feels like they're speaking different languages on this one 😕. And don't even get me started on policing protests 🚫... Tisch's approach just seems so... soft 💁‍♀️. I mean, I get where she's coming from with quality of life enforcement and all, but at what cost? 👀

OMG 🤯, can you believe it? The new NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch is already hinting that she might not see eye to eye with the Mayor-elect on some major issues 😳, like bail reform! I'm all about supporting bail reform, it's so crucial in reducing mass incarceration and addressing systemic injustices 🔓. Meanwhile, Mamdani's plan for a Department of Community Safety sounds super intriguing 🤔, could be a game-changer for mental health support & social services in NYC.

I do have to say though, I'm loving the positivity around Tisch's appointment 👏, she seems like an amazing leader who genuinely cares about policing reform. Fingers crossed that her experience & expertise will help find common ground with Mamdani 🤞, can't wait to see how this partnership unfolds 💥

🤔 yaaas i knew this was gonna happen... mamdani's got some tricks up his sleeve 🕵️‍♂️ he's gonna try to merge the police with social services, it's like they're trying to control our minds 🔮 have you seen the way tisch is trying to cover up her own agenda? she's all like "oh, i'm just here for the cops, not for mamdani" 🙄 but we ain't buying it. what if this is just a ploy to distract us from the real issues? crime rates might be going down, but at what cost? 🤷‍♀️

🤔 think its weird that theyre tryin to make policing & social services sound like a 1:1 thing lol hows that gonna work? also bail reform is super touchy, i mean tisch got vocal about it before so this is kinda surprising she took the job anyway 🤑 guess we'll just hav to see how its all playd out 🎭

🤝 People don't have to see eye-to-eye on everything to be able to hear each other out. You can have differing opinions and still come to a place of mutual respect. 💬 The key is not to force agreements, but to find common ground through active listening. 👂

🤔 So I was thinking, we all gotta accept that nobody's gonna agree on everything, you know? Even with people who share the same goals, there's always gonna be areas where you're like "I don't get it" or "we don't see eye to eye". But what's key is how you respond to those disagreements. Do you let 'em tear you down, or do you try to understand where they're coming from? It sounds like Tisch and Mamdani are gonna have some tough conversations ahead of 'em, but if they can keep an open mind and find common ground, that's when the real magic happens. 💡

Im worried about this new mayor-elect's plan on policing protests 🤔. As a parent, I just want my kid to be safe in any situation, but it seems like we're creating more problems than solutions with all these rules & regulations. What if they need help or protection during a protest? Shouldn't we be focusing on teaching kids about empathy and conflict resolution instead of throwing more cops at the issue? 🚨

And another thing, I dont understand why bail reform is so important to some people. My kid would never get away with breaking the law, but those who do seem like they're getting a slap on the wrist all too often 😔. How can we really make a difference when it feels like everyone's just trying to play by different rules? 🤷‍♀️

🤔 I'm kinda surprised about this development, especially since they're on the same team... but at the same time, it's not like they're going to magically agree on everything? 🙃 Bail reform is gonna be a big one, and if Tisch has been speaking out against those reforms, that's bound to make things interesting. I mean, Mamdani's stance on social injustices might lead to some heavy debates... but hey, at least they're both trying to find common ground? 🤝 It'll be fun to see how this all plays out! 😅 What do you think about a Department of Community Safety tho? Should the NYPD and mental health services just collab or what?

🤔 I'm low-key worried about this bail reform thing 🚫. Tisch seems like she's all about keeping the streets safe & secure, but if it means putting more people behind bars for minor offenses, that's not right 😕. Mamdani's all about social justice, which is awesome 👏, but how's he gonna balance that with the need for law & order? 🤷‍♂️ It's a tough spot to be in, fam 💪. At least they're acknowledging their differences & trying to work together 💬. Fingers crossed they can find some common ground on this one! 🤞 #BailReform #PublicSafety #CollaborationMatters

omg u guys i just cant even lol so i was thinking maybe we dont need all this reform stuff idk its just that sometimes i feel like police officers are being really unfairly judged like my cousin is a cop and hes literally the nicest person ever and he gets hated on by everyone online 🤷‍♀️ anyways back to NYPD stuff so apparently Tisch and Mamdani have diff opinions on bail reform but idk why cant we just be more like europe or something where they got it way better under control lol Tisch is literally saying she stays bc of the ppl tho which i feel u 💖

🤔💡 so i think its cool that tisch is being all transparent about not seeing eye to eye with mamdani on everything 📝💬. like, who expects ppl to agree 100%? it's actually refreshing that they're acknowledging their differences and trying to work through them 💕. but bail reform is a tough one 🚫... i feel for the community that's been affected by those reforms and i can see why tisch would be skeptical 👮‍♀️. maybe mamdani's proposal on community safety will help bridge that gap 🌈? as for policing protests, idk man... seems like an either/or situation to me 🤷‍♂️. but hey, at least they're both committed to finding common ground and not gonna just ignore each other 🙏. here's a simple flowchart to visualize their differing views on bail reform:
