Putin should have accepted Trump's deal. Now Russia's collapsing economy could lead to his downfall | Simon Tisdall

Vladimir Putin's War of Choice: A Sinking Economy and a Possible Downfall

Russia's economy, which had been artificially propped up by increased defense spending over the past two years, has started to show signs of collapse. The country's oil and gas income, which accounts for up to 50% of state revenue, is down 27% year on year, and inflation is at an alarming rate of 8%. As the war in Ukraine continues to drag on, Putin is facing a perfect storm of economic woes that could ultimately be his downfall.

The latest "peace" deal offered by Donald Trump was rejected by Putin, who remains convinced that he can achieve all of his goals through military force alone. However, Putin's premise is fundamentally flawed. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has resulted in the deaths of over 280,000 Russians and continues to ravage the country's economy.

Russia's refineries, pipelines, and "shadow fleet" of oil tankers carrying illicit exports are all vulnerable to attack from Ukrainian naval drone strikes. Kyiv has identified these weak points and is regularly hitting energy facilities deep inside Russia, causing panic and fuel shortages. As a result, Russia's two energy giants, Rosneft and Lukoil, are struggling to stay afloat as Asian buyers rush to avoid secondary US sanctions.

Putin's economic ruin of Russia is matched by plummeting geopolitical influence. The war has left Moscow isolated, with Syria and Venezuela looking elsewhere for support. Even China, which had previously been a key ally, has turned against Russia due to US pressure.

The "Russia is winning" narrative that has long supported Putin's actions is now increasingly delusional. While there have been some marginal territorial advances, these gains are not as significant as Putin claims them to be. The true extent of the damage caused by the war is only beginning to become clear, with Russia suffering one million casualties since the full-scale invasion began.

The question on everyone's mind is: how much longer will the Russian people tolerate their dictator-president? Putin's willingness to risk the lives and well-being of ordinary Russians is evident in his cynical efforts to exploit poverty and demographic collapse. The latest blood money schemes, which offer death benefits to infantry volunteers from poor rural areas, are a stark reminder of the regime's disregard for its citizens.

A new report by the LSE experts has found that while the war has temporarily boosted the incomes of 20% of Russians, it is hugely socially divisive. For the bulk of Russians, real incomes have fallen by 16-42%. This could lead to deteriorating economic conditions and intensify intra-elite and intra-regime tensions.

The latest US negotiating fiasco has once again exposed Trump's inept Ukraine "strategy". The plan to appease Russia from the start has undermined Ukraine by attacking Zelenskyy and halting arms supplies. Europe must step in with more weapons for Ukraine, reparation loans using seized Russian assets, fully enforced energy sanctions, tougher kinetic responses to sabotage and cyber-attacks, and a more united determination to help end Putin's age of terror.

In the end, it is not Russia that will "win" this war, but rather its leader, Vladimir Putin. His economy is collapsing, his influence is waning, and his people are suffering. As the Russian nation is too big to fail, so too is its dictator-president. He is losing, not winning, and sooner or later, he will be brought down by the very forces he has sought to crush.

๐Ÿค” this war is literally draining the life out of russia, both economically and morally... like, who needs that many deaths on their hands? 280k+ russian lives lost so far? it's mind-blowing... and don't even get me started on the global isolation - china's basically ghosted them ๐Ÿคฎ

anyway, it's clear that putin's whole "military force alone" thing isn't working out as planned... and those blood money schemes? ๐Ÿ’ธ just another example of how he's willing to sacrifice his own people for power. and let's not forget about the economic hit - 27% decline in oil & gas income is no joke ๐Ÿ“‰

i'm not sure when exactly putin will be brought down, but i think it's only a matter of time... like, his economy can't keep collapsing forever, right? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

I'm low-key calling BS on Putin's whole "we're gonna win this war" narrative ๐Ÿค‘. Like, dude's economy is literally imploding and his people are suffering. He's basically playing a losing game of chicken with the world and it's only a matter of time before he gets taken down ๐Ÿ’ฅ

I think it's crazy that Putin thought war would solve all his problems... ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ’ฅ Russia's economy is literally crumbling under him and people are dying left and right ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ‘Ž The whole "peace" deal thing was just a joke, right? And now Trump is saying what we've been thinking for ages... Putin's lost touch with reality ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ‘€ He's got his head in the sand and it's gonna be his downfall ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’ฅ Mark my words, the Russian people are fed up and it won't take much to bring him down ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿ’ช

I think Putin's whole situation is super bleak lol ๐Ÿ˜‚. The economy is literally tanking and people are dying left and right over this war. And don't even get me started on how isolated Russia is now ๐Ÿค. Like, China isn't even supporting them anymore? That's wild.

But what really gets me is how Putin is just so out of touch with reality ๐Ÿ’”. He thinks he can win the war through military force alone? Please. The numbers don't lie, dude. Over 280k Russians have died and the economy is in shambles ๐Ÿคฏ.

I'm not gonna sugarcoat it, though - I think Putin's downfall is inevitable ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. His people are suffering and his economy is collapsing. And Europe needs to step up and help Ukraine out more ๐Ÿค. It's time for some real action, not just empty words ๐Ÿ’ฌ.

I'm telling ya, Putin's got a death wish ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ! This war thingy's been sucking Russia dry for years now, and it's like he won't listen to anyone else's advice. The poor dude's got his head in the clouds, thinking that military power alone can solve everything ๐Ÿ’ฅ. Newsflash: it can't ๐Ÿ˜ด. He's just gonna keep on losing, and sooner or later, his own people will rise up against him ๐Ÿ”ฅ. I mean, have you seen those death benefits for infantry volunteers? Talk about blood money ๐Ÿ’ธ! The guy's got no concept of what it means to lead a country ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

I feel bad for Vlad but honestly his financial woes rly got him coming ๐Ÿ˜Š. I mean who wouldn't wanna stop fighting a war that's draining ur economy ๐Ÿ’ธ? The fact that Asia is snubbing Russia & China is turning on them too, is just insane ๐Ÿคฏ Putin thought he was invincible, but the truth is, military might ain't everything ๐Ÿ’ช. And now, Ukraine is exposing all his weaknesses ๐Ÿ˜ณ. I'm not saying Putin's entirely at fault, but this war rly has to stop ASAP ๐Ÿ™. The suffering it's causing Russia and its people can't be ignored โค๏ธ

Man... 280k Russians dead already? ๐Ÿคฏ It's just crazy thinking about how much destruction this war is causing. I mean, Putin's whole "military might" thing isn't gonna save him now... the economy's tanking and his people are paying the price ๐Ÿ’ธ. And you're right, he's exploiting poverty and desperation to keep his regime afloat. It's just so sad that it's come to this ๐Ÿค•.

You know, I was talking to my mates about this and we all agree: the West needs to step up their game when it comes to supporting Ukraine. We can't just sit back and let Putin get away with this... he's got to be held accountable for what he's done ๐Ÿ”ฅ. And I love how they're targeting his energy infrastructure - that's like, right under his nose! ๐Ÿคฃ.

But seriously, it's time for Putin to go. His regime is all about fear and intimidation, and it's gotta stop. The Russian people deserve better, you know? They need someone who cares about them, not just their own power and influence ๐Ÿ’–.

๐Ÿšซ Putin's economy is tanking, and I feel bad for the Russian people ๐Ÿค•. 280k+ casualties and an economic crash that's gonna hit everyday life hard ๐Ÿ’ธ. The war in Ukraine isn't even winning anyone - just piling up human costs & global sanctions ๐ŸŒช๏ธ. Can't help but wonder how long Putin's grip on Russia holds out? โฐ

I just don't get how Putin thought increasing defense spending would keep his economy afloat ๐Ÿค”. It seems like it's finally caught up with him. Russia's economy was already struggling, but now it's on life support ๐Ÿ’ธ. I worry about the innocent civilians getting caught in the middle of this mess. The losses are staggering - over 280,000 Russians have lost their lives, and more are dying every day ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ. It's not just Putin's reputation that's at stake, but also the lives of his people ๐Ÿ‘ฅ.

I'm low-key freaking out about Putin's war in Ukraine ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ’ฅ. This guy has no idea what's going on. The economy is tanking, inflation is through the roof, and he's still convinced that military force will save him? ๐Ÿ˜‚ Please. Russia is a sinking ship, and it's gonna take everyone with it ๐Ÿšข๐Ÿ’ฆ.

I mean, come on, 280k Russians dead and counting? That's not a "war of choice" โ€“ that's a war of utter madness ๐Ÿ’ฅ. And what's the plan again? To get all this done through military force alone? ๐Ÿ˜‚ Putin needs to wake up from his fantasy land and see reality for what it is.

And don't even get me started on China and Syria turning against him ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿšซ. He's got no friends, just enemies and debt collectors. The "Russia is winning" narrative is so played out โ€“ it's time for Putin to concede defeat ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ.

I'm worried about the Russian people, though. They're gonna get caught in the crossfire of Putin's recklessness ๐Ÿ˜ข. It's time for some major changes, and fast โฑ๏ธ. We need more sanctions, more aid for Ukraine, and a lot less tolerance for Putin's antics ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ’ช. This guy needs to go ๐Ÿ’ฅ.

๐Ÿค” I think Putin's war in Ukraine is a total disaster for Russia, you feel? Like, their economy is literally tanking and inflation is through the roof ๐Ÿ’ธ. And it's not just the economy, but also the people suffering, with over 280k Russians already dead ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ. It's like, what's Putin thinking, man? He thinks he can just keep going on with military force alone? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ Newsflash: it's not working out for him ๐Ÿ˜.

And I gotta say, the whole "Russia is winning" narrative is pretty laughable now ๐Ÿ“บ. The gains they're making are way overblown and anyone who still thinks Putin's got a strong hand in Ukraine is just being duped ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ.

I'm not surprised China and Syria have distanced themselves from Russia, either ๐Ÿ‘€. They saw how weak Russia was going to be when the US came for them, and they're smart enough to stay away from that ๐Ÿค“.

It's gonna take a lot for the Russian people to keep putting up with Putin, you know? I mean, he's basically exploiting poverty and demographic collapse ๐Ÿ’ธ. It's like, how much more can one person take before they crack?! ๐Ÿคฏ

Anyway, the US needs to step it up for Ukraine ASAP โšก๏ธ. We need to put some real pressure on Russia and make Putin regret messing with us ๐Ÿ™„. Otherwise, he'll just keep getting away with it and Russia will continue its downward spiral ๐Ÿ’”.
