Richard Burton: Wild Genius review – zero analysis, but loads of euphemisms for extreme hotness

The biopic of Richard Burton's life serves up an hour-long documentary that adds a touch of glamour to the actor's well-known story thanks to a cast of colorful contributors, including family members and former co-stars.

Burton's rise to fame was nothing short of meteoric. After being spotted by theatre producer Binkie Beaumont in a college production of Measure for Measure, he was catapulted into stardom overnight in 1952 as the lead in My Cousin Rachel opposite Olivia de Havilland. This early success set him on a path of excess and extravagance, with Burton's life becoming synonymous with high-stakes relationships, drinking, and debauchery.

The documentary attempts to spin this narrative as some sort of tragic love story, where Burton was driven by an insatiable appetite for passion and excess. His marriage to Elizabeth Taylor is portrayed as a whirlwind romance that left everyone awestruck. However, the film's tone veers perilously close to hagiography, with nary a criticism in sight.

It's worth noting that this approach may be too convenient, especially given Burton's complicated personal life and questionable treatment of those around him. His marriage to Taylor was marked by intense passion but also by tumultuous arguments, accusations of infidelity, and the eventual accusation of "erotic vagrancy" from the Vatican, which ultimately led to their divorce.

The documentary ends with a fleeting analysis that attempts to justify Burton's excesses as a form of creative expression. However, this comes across as little more than an attempt to salvage his reputation rather than genuinely examining the costs of his choices.

One can't help but feel that the film is stuck in a bygone era, where the concept of a "wild genius" – an actor whose passion and excess are celebrated as part of their artistic persona – feels woefully outdated. It's time for a more nuanced exploration of Burton's life, one that acknowledges both his triumphs and failures without resorting to sanitized myth-making.

🎥💔 I gotta say, this biopic is a bit too focused on the glamour part and doesn't really dig deep enough into Richard Burton's personal struggles 🤕. It feels like they're trying to present him as some kind of tragic hero, but that glosses over the complexities of his life and relationships 💯. We need a more balanced look at his story, you know? Like, let's not just celebrate his passion and talent, but also acknowledge the hurt he caused to those around him 🤝. It's time to move beyond the "wild genius" narrative and give us a more realistic understanding of this iconic actor's life 💫.

omg u gotta watch this new doc on Richard Burton tho! 🤩 I'm totally binged it in 1 day lol its soooo glamorous & alluring like elizabeth taylor 🌹 but at the same time, i feel like its kinda glossing over some darker stuff like how he treated his wives & ppl around him 🙅‍♀️ i mean dont get me wrong im a total burton stan 😍 but sometimes i wish they'd show a more balanced view of his life. still, its so much fun to see him on screen all those years ago 💫

I'm tellin' ya, this biopic thingy is just a bit too glossed over, if you ask me 🤔. I mean, Richard Burton was definitely a talented actor and all, but let's not forget the elephant in the room – the not-so-glamorous stuff he went through. His relationships were super intense, to say the least, and his treatment of those around him wasn't exactly noble 🙄. The doco tries to make it sound like he was just a big ol' softie who got carried away with his passions, but come on, we've all seen that before 😒. It's time to have a more honest chat about the human side of these celebrities, you know? Maybe then we can appreciate their talents without getting swept up in the fairy tale narrative 📺.

🤔 I'm so done with these biopics trying to turn their subjects into mythical figures 🙄. Like, Richard Burton's story is definitely interesting, but it can't be reduced to just 'tragic love' or 'wild genius'. His personal life was messy, and it's not all glamour and passion 💔. They're glossing over the fact that he treated people poorly, especially his wives and loved ones. And now they're trying to spin it as some sort of artistic expression 🎨? No thanks! I want more nuance in my biopics, you know? The good with the bad. The highs and lows. Not just a sanitized version of someone's life. 💖

I think the doc is missing the point of Richard Burton's story 🤔. I mean, sure, he was a talented actor and all, but let's be real, his personal life was a hot mess 🚽. Like, we get it, he had passion and excess, but that doesn't necessarily make him a hero or an icon. And yeah, the doc is super sanitized – I felt like I was watching a Disney movie 😒. They gloss over all the messy parts of his relationships and just focus on how 'romantic' they were 🙄. It's like they're trying to create this mythology around him instead of actually exploring the complexities of his life. And don't even get me started on how they spin his infidelity – it's like, yeah, he made some bad choices, but that doesn't mean he was a 'wild genius' 💔. Can we please have a more nuanced look at this guy and his life? 🤷‍♀️

im not sure about this docu on richard burton... it feels like theyre glossin over the bad stuff 🤔. i mean, yeah he was a genius and all, but at what cost? he hurt ppl in his life, like elizabeth taylor, and still gets portrayed as some kinda romantic hero 🚫. its time to have a more balanced look at his life, ya know? like, didnt he also get into some pretty shady stuff with the catholic church? 🤷‍♂️ and dont even get me started on his treatment of women... that whole "erotic vagrancy" thing from the vatican is wild 😳. we need to be honest about our heroes' flaws, not just swoon over their glamour 💁‍♀️.

man i think this biopic is gonna be all about glamourizing richard burton's wild life 🤩 but you know what would've made it better? a more balanced look at the highs and lows 🤔 like, yeah he was super talented and had some iconic roles but also let's not forget he wasn't exactly the nicest guy to those around him 😒 his marriage to elizabeth taylor was all passion and fireworks but also intense drama and hurtful moments for everyone involved 💔

🎥💁‍♂️ "The truth is rarely pure and never simple." - Oscar Wilde

I think the documentary tries to glamorize Richard Burton's life too much, it feels like they're more interested in showcasing his wild side than actually exploring the complexities of his personality. It's time for a more balanced look at his life, one that acknowledges both his artistic genius and his personal demons 💔

🤔 I'm not buying the whole 'tragic love story' vibe on this documentary... it seems like they're glossing over some pretty shady stuff about Richard Burton's personal life 🙅‍♂️. Like, yeah, his marriage to Elizabeth Taylor was passionate, but also super toxic 🔥. And what's with the Vatican accusing him of 'erotic vagrancy'?! That's not exactly something you can just sweep under the rug 💯. It feels like they're trying to make Burton out to be some kind of tortured artist genius 🎨, but really he was probably just a product of his time and privilege 👑. The film needs to do more than just give us a polished package – it needs to get real about the human cost of his choices 💔.

I don't know if this biopic is doing Richard Burton justice 😐. I mean, the guy was talented, no doubt about it, but the documentary comes across as super glamorized and glosses over some pretty serious issues 🤦‍♀️. Like, yeah, his marriage to Liz Taylor was wild, but let's not forget all the drama and hurt he caused her in the process 💔. And what's with the whole "wild genius" thing? It feels like they're trying too hard to make him out as some sort of tragic hero rather than acknowledging the complexity of his life 🤷‍♂️. I wish we got a more balanced look at who he was and what he did, you know?

I mean, I get what they're trying to do with this documentary - show Richard Burton in all his glamorous glory - but sometimes it feels like they're just glossing over the not-so-glamorous parts of his life 🤷‍♂️. Like, yeah, he was a genius on screen, but did we really need to sanitize his personal struggles too? I think it's cool that they got family members and old co-stars to contribute to the doc, though - it gives you a more well-rounded idea of who Burton actually was 📚. And I agree, maybe it's time for a more nuanced look at his life... we don't have to romanticize excess just because it's part of his story 😊.

🤔 I'm kinda thinking this doco is trying too hard to make Richard Burton out to be some kinda tortured soul genius 🎨, you know? Like, we're supposed to just swallow the whole 'wild genius' narrative hook, line, and sinker 💁‍♀️. But what about all the other side of the story? The stuff about him being super controlling and manipulative with his wives? Elizabeth Taylor herself said he was a total drama queen 🤯... shouldn't we be seeing that too? 🎥 It's like they're trying to whitewash his reputation just 'cause it's gonna sell more tickets 💸. And don't even get me started on the Vatican thing 😏... what's really goin' down there, huh?
