The Gambler review – kooky dancing and onstage rock in dizzying Dostoevsky adaptation

Chiten Theatre's The Gambler is a frenetic, visually striking adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky's 1866 novella, which tells the story of Alexei Ivanovich, a roulette addict who wagered his publishing rights on completing the book to pay off his debts. Watching this production will leave you breathless, especially if you're not familiar with the plot.

Delivered in Japanese at breakneck speed, the show features a dizzying array of kooky dancing, spinning sets, and onstage rock trio Kukangendai adding to the theatrical onslaught. The production is constructed from fragments of Dostoevsky's text, which charts Alexei's financial and romantic fortunes as he tutors for a family.

The set design is particularly noteworthy, with Itaru Sugiyama's roulette-wheel creation spinning furiously not just by its own mechanism but also through the increasingly frenzied pushes of an exhausted Alexei. Above the wheel, a circle of LEDs glows in series, tracking the roulette ball on which so many fates hang.

Director Motoi Miura takes a stylized approach to dialogue and movement, emphasizing characters' financial precarity with chest-tightening effect. The cast is ably led by Takahide Akimoto as Alexei, whose ferocious monologues reveal the depths of his obsession with roulette and the danger that lies within.

Satoko Abe shines as Grandmother, bringing much-needed humour to the production, while Mademoiselle Blanche's deadpan delivery adds a layer of complexity to the plot. The show is not for those who enjoy watching characters develop through their relationships; instead, it focuses on the panicked slog of addiction.

Ultimately, The Gambler is an immersive experience that will leave you gasping for air. If you're willing to dive into its frenetic world, you'll be rewarded with a thrilling ride through the highs and lows of Alexei's chaotic life.

I just watched this crazy adaptation of Dostoevsky's The Gambler at Chiten Theatre and I'm still reeling from it! 🤯 The pacing is insane, they're delivering the dialogue in Japanese like it's a high-speed chase – I was literally holding my breath as the roulette wheel spun out of control. And that set design? Whoa, Itaru Sugiyama really outdid himself with those LEDs glowing above the wheel, it was like the whole room was spinning along with Alexei 🌪️.

The director, Motoi Miura, took a super stylized approach to the show, and I mean that in the best possible way – Takahide Akimoto as Alexei is just incredible, his monologues are so intense they'll leave you breathless 😲. And Mademoiselle Blanche's deadpan delivery? Genius! The whole thing just feels like a wild ride, like being trapped in Alexei's chaotic world with no escape 🔒.

But what really gets me about this show is how it captures the desperation of addiction – it's not all glamour and excitement (although, I mean, the kooky dancing and spinning sets are pretty awesome 😆). It's raw, it's intense, and it'll leave you gasping for air. So if you're up for a thrilling ride through the highs and lows of Alexei's life, then The Gambler at Chiten Theatre is definitely worth checking out 💥

OMG u gotta see this new show! 🤯 Chiten Theatre's The Gambler is like nothing I've ever seen before - it's like a wild rollercoaster for ur eyes!!! 🎠 The dancing, spinning sets, & rock trio Kukangendai are insane!! 😲 And Takahide Akimoto as Alexei is literally on fire 🔥! He pours his heart out in those monologues... it gives me chills just thinking about it. 👻 The set design is mind-blowing too - the way the LEDs glow above the roulette wheel is like magic ✨. If u're ready for a thrilling ride, then this show is for u! Just be prepared to hold ur breath 😅.

🎭💥 I'm loving this super intense adaptation of The Gambler! It's like being trapped in a never-ending casino scene from Casino Royale 🍲😅 but without all the Bond charm (not that that's what this show needs, it's already got more edge than 007 😏). The choreography is insane and I'm here for more of those crazy dance moves 💃🕺. Takahide Akimoto as Alexei brings so much energy to the role, his monologues are like a wild rollercoaster ride 🎠🔥! It's not for the faint of heart though, if you're easily stressed just watching people struggle with addiction...this might be too real 😬.

lol just watched this crazy adaptation of Dostoevsky's novella and I'm still reeling 💥🎭 - the set design is insane 🤯 and Takahide Akimoto as Alexei is on fire 🔥! but seriously, it's like they're trying to physically show how much pressure he's under with that roulette wheel spinning like crazy 🔄 and Satoko Abe stealing every scene she's in 😂. anyway, if you're into high-energy theatre this might be the one for you 🎉 check out the reviews on [The Gambler Chiten Theatre production](https://www.theatre.jp/en/productions/12745)

Takahide Akimoto's performance is EVERYTHING 😲 and Satoko Abe's humor as grandmothers is the best part 💁‍♀️ i was literally gasping for air during the whole show 🤯 gotta get tix ASAP!!!

OMG 🤯 I'm totally blown away by this Chiten Theatre production of The Gambler! Like, it's so intense, right? All those flashing lights and crazy dancing... I felt like I was on the edge of my seat, wondering if Alexei would win or lose that next hand 😂. And Takahide Akimoto as Alexei? Forget about it, he's on fire 🔥! The way Director Motoi Miura uses dialogue and movement to convey the characters' desperation is totally genius 🤓. I'm not usually one for watching a show that focuses on addiction and financial struggles, but this one had me hooked from start to finish 💯. It's like they're pulling you into Alexei's world and refusing to let go 😅. I need to see it live ASAP! 👏

Just saw Chiten Theatre's The Gambler, what a wild ride 😱! Dostoevsky's classic is like an adrenaline shot - fast-paced, intense, and not for the faint hearted 💥! Takahide Akimoto steals the show as the roulette-obsessed Alexei 🎩. Set design is insane, like a spinning top on steroids 🌪️! Don't go in expecting character development, just buckle up and enjoy the frantic energy ⚡️!

I mean, I went to see this Chiten Theatre production of The Gambler and it was wild 🤯! The special effects and set design were straight outta a sci-fi movie, like that one spinning wheel in Alexei's room just kept going and going... I'm not even kidding it felt like he'd never stop 😂. But what really got me was how the show made you feel like you're trapped in that character's world - all anxious and whatnot. Not sure if I'll be watching this again anytime soon though 🤔, feels a bit too intense for my taste.

🤯 I mean, have you ever felt like you're in way over your head? Like, everything is spinning out of control and you're just trying to keep up? 😩 That's what The Gambler is all about, man! It's like, we can all relate to Alexei's struggles with addiction and financial insecurity. But the thing is, he doesn't give up 🙅‍♂️. He keeps pushing forward, even when it feels like everything is falling apart. And that's the lesson here: sometimes you gotta keep going, even when things get crazy 😲. It's not always easy, but trust me, it's worth it 💪.

I can totally imagine how intense this production must've been 🤯! I mean, watching something that fast in Japanese must've been like having your heart racing just from reading about it... But at the same time, I love how it brings out the raw emotions of Alexei's story - like, can you even breathe during those parts? 😓 And the cast is so talented! Takahide Akimoto really nails Alexei's desperation, and Satoko Abe is hilarious as Grandmother 🤣. It sounds like The Gambler is not for everyone, but if you're in for a wild ride, it might just be what you need 💥

I just watched this crazy adaptation of The Gambler at Chiten Theatre 🤯🎭 and I'm still reeling from it! They really took Dostoevsky's classic novella and turned it into an absolute thrill ride, with sets spinning like a roulette wheel 🔄 and the cast delivering some seriously intense performances. Takahide Akimoto as Alexei was on point, bringing so much energy to the role... but I have to say, Mademoiselle Blanche's deadpan delivery had me laughing out loud 😂! The only thing that would've made it better is a bit more character development, but overall, it's an absolute must-see for anyone who loves drama and action 🎥. The special effects were insane too - I half expected the roulette wheel to come crashing down on stage at any moment! 😅

OMG, this Chiten Theatre production sounds like WILD 🔥! The idea of adapting Dostoevsky's novella into a visually striking show that combines dance, music, and rock is pure genius 🤩. I'm intrigued by the fast-paced Japanese delivery - will it be challenging to follow for non-Japanese speakers? 🤔 And the set design sounds AMAZING 💥! The use of LEDs to track the roulette ball is so cool 💡. I'd love to see this show, but maybe not if I need a calm experience 😴... does anyone know how long tickets are available? 🎟️

I'm not sure how I feel about this adaptation 🤔... part of me loves the energy and visuals - it's like watching a wild rollercoaster ride 😂... but at the same time, I worry that they're losing some of the deeper themes and character development in the process 🤷‍♂️... Takahide Akimoto's performance is definitely on point though 🙌... and Satoko Abe bringing some much-needed laughs as Grandmother is a highlight 👏... overall it sounds like an intense experience, but whether that's a good thing or not is up for debate 🤔💥

🎭 I loved this production! The way they used movement and dialogue to convey the chaos of Alexei's addiction was so captivating. But, oh man, some of those Japanese lines were moving at light speed 🔄 - you could barely catch your breath! The set design with that spinning roulette wheel was insane 😱, and the LED circle above it added an extra layer of tension. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Takahide Akimoto's performance as Alexei was incredible, so intense and passionate 🤯. And Satoko Abe's Grandmother was a lovely surprise - her comedic timing was spot on 😂. My only gripe is that some scenes felt a bit disjointed, like they were missing some context for the plot. Still, overall, I'd say it's an exhilarating ride you won't want to miss 🎠

🤯 I just watched this Chiten Theatre production of The Gambler and I'm still reeling from the experience! 🎥 It's like they took Dostoevsky's novella and turned it into a wild, high-stakes rollercoaster ride 🎠😱 The set design is insane, I loved how the LED circle tracked the roulette ball - it added to the tension so much! 📊 But what really stood out to me was the cast's performances. Takahide Akimoto as Alexei just nailed his character's desperation and obsession... it was like watching someone spiral out of control 😩. And Satoko Abe as Grandmother brought this dry humour that completely flipped my mood around 😂. I think what struck me most, though, is how this show deals with addiction - it's so raw and unflinching 🤕. Would love to see more productions tackle this topic in a similar way... 🎭👏

I mean... I think it sounds super intense 🤯, like watching a rollercoaster of emotions, but at the same time, I'm not sure if I'd actually want to watch that kind of frenetic energy all the time? The show seems really visually striking, especially with all the spinning sets and kooky dancing, but isn't that just gonna be exhausting? 🤯 And don't even get me started on how fast they speak Japanese... I mean, I'm sure it's a great way to keep things moving, but wouldn't some of us need a break from all the speed? 😩

On the other hand, I love how the director is using dialogue and movement to show Alexei's financial struggles, that's so clever 🤓. And Takahide Akimoto as Alexei sounds like he's got some serious acting chops, which would definitely bring a lot of depth to the character. Plus, it's always great to see actors bring complexity to their roles with deadpan deliveries... Mademoiselle Blanche is going to be awesome! 💁‍♀️

Umm, I guess what I'm trying to say is that The Gambler sounds like an experience you'll either love or hate, and maybe I'd rather appreciate it from a distance? 🤔

omg this production is SO intense 🔥! I love how they took Dostoevsky's novella and turned it into this high-energy spectacle 🤯! Takahide Akimoto as Alexei is giving me LIFE, his monologues are so raw and emotional 😩. And Satoko Abe's humor in the role of Grandmother is just what you need to balance out the drama 😂. The set design is straight fire 🔥, I'm low-key obsessed with that spinning roulette wheel! 🔄 The only thing holding me back from giving it 10/10 would be that it's not exactly character-driven, but I get why they'd want to focus on Alexei's addiction struggle 🤯. still, I think this production is a MUST-SEE for anyone who loves theatre and is down for an adrenaline rush 💥!

I'm loving this adaptation of The Gambler! 🤩 The way they've mixed in kooky dancing and spinning sets is pure genius - it really captures the frenetic energy of Dostoevsky's novella. But I do think the pacing might be a bit too fast for non-fans, like me who haven't read the book beforehand 😅. Still, the cast is top-notch and Takahide Akimoto as Alexei really brings the house down with those intense monologues! 🎭 The set design is also super impressive, especially that spinning roulette wheel - it's like you're right there in the midst of the action! 💥
