A 79-year-old man with dementia, Jiankang Huang, was tragically killed by a freight train in East Oakland on November 19th. His body was found on the railroad tracks at the intersection of 60th Avenue and San Leandro Street, a location just three miles from his senior citizens housing complex, Broadmoor Plaza.
Huang's disappearance had been reported to San Leandro police on November 18th, after he failed to return home. In an effort to locate him, the authorities distributed flyers with his picture and alerted other law enforcement agencies. However, it was later revealed that Huang had previously gone missing twice before - in August and February 2023 - from the same facility, only to be found safe and sound.
Despite efforts by San Leandro police to locate Huang's family or friends who may have been aware of his whereabouts, none of these individuals could be reached for comment. The facility where he had been living, Broadmoor Plaza, has declined to provide any further information about Huang's time there.
A second victim of a train collision in the area - an unidentified man who died after being struck by an Amtrak train on November 18th - is still awaiting positive identification by the coroner's office.

A 79-yr-old guy with dementia just got killed by a freight train! 
I mean, i feel bad for his family & all, but what really gets me is that he went missing TWICE before from the same facility! 
Like, how do they not keep track of ppl like this?! It's already hard enough takin care of seniors with dementia, but it seems like this place just dropped the ball. 
& on top of that, they won't even talk to his family or friends about what happened while he was there? 
Like, come on Broadmoor Plaza! Get some accountability! 
This is just heartbreaking... A life cut short, all because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time 
. You'd think that with two previous incidents already happening from the same facility, something would've been done to ensure his safety better 
. It's like they say "better safe than sorry" but I guess that didn't apply in this case 
. It just makes me wish that people could look out for each other more, especially when it comes to vulnerable folks like those with dementia

anyone else hear about this? so some dude with dementia just gets lost in broadmoor plaza and ends up getting killed by a freight train like what even... thats not all, there was another guy who got hit by an amtrak train 2 days ago but they still cant ID him yet

. I mean, shouldn't they be helping to piece together what happened to him instead of just saying nothing? It's like they're protecting something or someone.
. We need to make sure our seniors are being looked after properly and if they go missing, authorities take action ASAP. This is just unacceptable.
. Train safety is a huge concern in our community, we need to make sure these facilities are doing more to keep their residents safe. We should also be supporting the family during this difficult time

the fact that they won't give any info on his stay there is really sketchy 
it's like he just vanished into thin air. I'm so angry for him and his family but at the same time, I'm trying to process how this could happen in broad daylight in a city as big as Oakland. 60th Avenue is literally right next to his complex, what was going through the mind of that freight train driver?! 
And omg, a second victim? that's just crazy 
I can imagine how Huang's family must be feeling, he was only 79 years old and now he's gone 
. Hopefully his family gets some answers soon
