Victim of Oakland fatal train collision was San Leandro missing person

A 79-year-old man with dementia, Jiankang Huang, was tragically killed by a freight train in East Oakland on November 19th. His body was found on the railroad tracks at the intersection of 60th Avenue and San Leandro Street, a location just three miles from his senior citizens housing complex, Broadmoor Plaza.

Huang's disappearance had been reported to San Leandro police on November 18th, after he failed to return home. In an effort to locate him, the authorities distributed flyers with his picture and alerted other law enforcement agencies. However, it was later revealed that Huang had previously gone missing twice before - in August and February 2023 - from the same facility, only to be found safe and sound.

Despite efforts by San Leandro police to locate Huang's family or friends who may have been aware of his whereabouts, none of these individuals could be reached for comment. The facility where he had been living, Broadmoor Plaza, has declined to provide any further information about Huang's time there.

A second victim of a train collision in the area - an unidentified man who died after being struck by an Amtrak train on November 18th - is still awaiting positive identification by the coroner's office.

OMG, can u believe this?! 🀯 A 79-yr-old guy with dementia just got killed by a freight train! 😱 I mean, i feel bad for his family & all, but what really gets me is that he went missing TWICE before from the same facility! 🚨 Like, how do they not keep track of ppl like this?! It's already hard enough takin care of seniors with dementia, but it seems like this place just dropped the ball. πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ & on top of that, they won't even talk to his family or friends about what happened while he was there? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ Like, come on Broadmoor Plaza! Get some accountability! πŸ’―

πŸ˜” This is just heartbreaking... A life cut short, all because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time πŸš‚πŸ‘΄. You'd think that with two previous incidents already happening from the same facility, something would've been done to ensure his safety better πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. It's like they say "better safe than sorry" but I guess that didn't apply in this case πŸ˜”. And what's really frustrating is that we don't even know who he was or how he ended up on the train tracks, so much of a tragedy feels lost to us πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. It just makes me wish that people could look out for each other more, especially when it comes to vulnerable folks like those with dementia πŸ’”.

just got this news and its giving me the chills πŸ€• anyone else hear about this? so some dude with dementia just gets lost in broadmoor plaza and ends up getting killed by a freight train like what even... thats not all, there was another guy who got hit by an amtrak train 2 days ago but they still cant ID him yet πŸ˜” its just so sad and frustrating how these things happen.

man, this is so sad πŸ’”. what kinda system we got where someone with dementia can just wander off and get killed like that? i mean, i know Broadmoor Plaza is a senior citizens housing complex, but shouldn't they be doin' more to keep their residents safe? especially with all the awareness about ppl with dementia these days 🀯. it's crazy that this dude had gone missing twice before too... maybe they could've done some investigation and found out what was goin' on? anyway, condolences to Jiankang Huang's family πŸ™.

This is just so heartbreaking πŸ€•. I mean, can't we do better for our seniors? The fact that this guy with dementia went missing TWICE before and no one seemed to care or even bother to check up on him is just disturbing. And now he ends up getting killed by a train like it's nothing. Like, his family got flyers put out but still couldn't find anyone who knew where he was? What's going on?

And what really gets me is that Broadmoor Plaza isn't being transparent about Jiankang's time there either πŸ€”. I mean, shouldn't they be helping to piece together what happened to him instead of just saying nothing? It's like they're protecting something or someone.

It's not just about this one guy, it's a system that needs to change 🚧. We need to make sure our seniors are being looked after properly and if they go missing, authorities take action ASAP. This is just unacceptable.

Can't believe ppl think senior homes r safe havens πŸ€• Still lots of unanswered questions 'bout Huang's disappearance... feels like he was just another forgotten soul πŸ’”

Man, this is so sad πŸ€•. Can't believe that Jiankang Huang went through that again. He was already dealing with dementia and then... I feel bad for his family too, no one has been able to reach out to them. It's like they just vanished into thin air. And Broadmoor Plaza not even giving any info about what happened to him? That's really weird πŸ™ƒ. Train safety is a huge concern in our community, we need to make sure these facilities are doing more to keep their residents safe. We should also be supporting the family during this difficult time πŸ’•.

It's just so sad what happened to Jiankang... πŸ€• I mean, he was only 79 and had dementia, which means his brain isn't working properly like it used to. It's not his fault that people didn't think of him being in danger 'cause he went missing before too. And now, his body is just lying on the tracks where trains go really fast... πŸš‚πŸ˜± It's crazy how sometimes these things happen and you can't even find out who someone was or what happened to them after they're gone.

Just can't believe this stuff happens 🀯 it's like our society needs to wake up and realize we gotta do more to look out for each other esp seniors πŸš‚ trains are supposed to be safe but sometimes accidents just happen... what's even crazier is that he had been missing before too, 3 times in one year?! need to know what was goin on behind those doors at Broadmoor Plaza πŸ‘€ the fact that they won't give any info on his stay there is really sketchy πŸ€” hope the fam gets some justice and the community comes together to make sure this never happens again πŸ’•

omg this is so sad πŸ€• Jiankang was only 79 and had dementia, you can't imagine what his family is going thru right now... the fact that he disappeared twice before from the same facility makes me wonder if anyone was paying attention or not πŸ™„ it's like he just vanished into thin air. I'm so angry for him and his family but at the same time, I'm trying to process how this could happen in broad daylight in a city as big as Oakland. 60th Avenue is literally right next to his complex, what was going through the mind of that freight train driver?! πŸš‚πŸ˜±

omg this is just heartbreaking, like what can be done to prevent these things from happening?! he was already living with dementia and they didnt even check on him properly before sending him back home that second time πŸ€• it makes me so angry thinking about his family having to deal with all of this 😩

I'm thinking that this is all so messed up πŸ€•, and yet at the same time I'm kinda surprised that more people didn't know Jiankang was missing before... like, shouldn't they be looking out for each other more? πŸ€” But on the flip side, it's also not entirely fair to blame the system or Broadmoor Plaza for everything - maybe these flyers just weren't reaching anyone, or perhaps there were some legit reasons why people didn't want to talk about it... πŸ˜• And omg, a second victim? that's just crazy 🚨. Anyway, I'm kinda torn on whether this is all the fault of poor planning or what... πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

OMG 🀯 this is so sad 😒 I can imagine how Huang's family must be feeling, he was only 79 years old and now he's gone πŸ’” it's just not fair. The fact that he had been to the facility before and came back safe and sound doesn't make sense here though... what happened in November? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ And another person died on the same day?! It's like, how many people have to die from these train accidents?! 😩

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ can't believe this dude got lost twice already and his fam didn't even bother to reach out... like, what are they waiting for? πŸ€” And the fact that Broadmoor Plaza doesn't want to talk about Jiankang's time there is just shady. πŸ™„ It's not like he was a bad guy or anything... πŸš‚ trains can be super unpredictable though, so I guess you gotta respect the rails πŸ’¨. Hopefully his family gets some answers soon 🀞.

omg what happened to this guy?! i mean, i know dementia can be super unpredictable but three miles from his home and he just...vanishes like that?? and they didn't even call him? it's crazy how some ppl might've known where he was going but chose not to reach out. and the fact that 2 other times he went missing for days & turned up safe is wild . anyway, my condolences to his family πŸ€•πŸ˜”

Man... this just breaks my heart πŸ€•. Can you believe what happened to that poor guy, Jiankang Huang? He was living right next door to his senior citizens housing complex and still managed to wander off and get hit by a freight train. It's like, how do we prevent these things from happening in the first place? 😩 The fact that he had gone missing twice before and nobody seemed to notice is just crazy. And now his family is left with no answers and... *sigh*. It's just so sad. We need to do something about this. Our seniors deserve better than to be living on the edge like that πŸš‚πŸ’”
