Video: Securing Somalia’s capital against al-Shabab threat

Mogadishu's streets once too perilous to tread are now bustling with commerce and life, thanks in large part to the city's recently implemented security measures. The increased presence of checkpoints and patrols is a constant reminder that Somalia's capital remains on high alert as it grapples with the ongoing threat from extremist group al-Shabab.

As Al Jazeera reporter Catherine Soi explored the city, she witnessed firsthand how these new security measures are aimed at keeping citizens safe while also paving the way for economic growth. Checkpoints now dot the streets where previously they would have been too dangerous to approach, and patrols provide an added layer of protection against any potential threats from the group.

Despite the progress made so far, the threat posed by al-Shabab remains a pressing concern for Mogadishu residents. The group has been waging a devastating insurgency in Somalia since 2006, and its presence is still felt throughout the city.

In order to restore stability and rebuild trust with the community, security forces are working closely with local authorities to implement a range of initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of extremism. These measures include job creation programs, poverty reduction efforts, and education and outreach campaigns designed to promote social cohesion and counter the group's ideology.

As Soi noted during her visit, "There's still much work to be done, but we're seeing signs that this approach is starting to pay off." With ongoing support from international partners and continued cooperation between security forces and local leaders, Mogadishu is slowly beginning to feel more secure. But as the city looks to rebuild and move forward, it remains to be seen whether these efforts will ultimately prove successful in eradicating the threat posed by al-Shabab.

🤞 I gotta say, Somalia's got some serious swagger now! 🔄 The fact that Mogadishu's streets are buzzing with commerce and life is a total testament to the city's resilience. And kudos to Catherine Soi for getting up close and personal with the new security measures - her reporting is always so on point! 💯 It's like, I get it, al-Shabab's still out there causing trouble, but the fact that Somalia's taking proactive steps to address the issue? That's some major progress right there. 📈 I'm all about that job creation program and poverty reduction vibes - gotta give those Somali entrepreneurs a shoutout! 💼 And education is key, you know? Teaching people that extremism isn't the way forward? That's a lesson we can all learn from. So, fingers crossed that these initiatives will pay off and Somalia can finally feel like it's on solid ground... 🤞

I'm so stoked to see that Mogadishu is finally starting to feel safe again 🌟! The security measures are a huge step forward, and I love how they're also trying to address the root causes of extremism with programs like job creation and education initiatives 💼📚. It's all about creating a better future for the people who live there, you know? And Catherine Soi's report just showed us that even though there's still much work to be done, we're seeing signs of progress 🌈. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that these efforts will lead to a more stable and secure city for everyone 🤞💕.

🌟 I'm so relieved to see that Mogadishu's streets are slowly becoming safer again 🙏. It's amazing how far Somalia has come since those tough times, and it's a testament to the bravery of the people who've lived through it all 💪. The new security measures might seem like just another layer of checkpoints, but trust me, every little bit counts 😊. These initiatives to address extremism are long overdue, and I'm so grateful that local authorities are working closely with security forces to create positive change 🌈. It's going to take time, patience, and effort, but I believe in the resilience of the Mogadishu community 💕. They deserve nothing but hope and support as they rebuild their lives and their city ❤️. Keep pushing forward, Somalia! You got this! 💪

I'm glad to see that Mogadishu's streets are becoming safer 🌟, but I gotta wonder how effective those checkpoints are really? Like, are they just papering over the problem or is it actually making a difference in keeping people safe? And what about the root causes of extremism, though? Are they really being addressed? It seems like it's all about security measures for now, but what about long-term solutions? Shouldn't we be focusing on education and economic growth more?

🙏 Security measures are a step in the right direction for Mogadishu! 🚨 Checkpoints & patrols have definitely made the city safer 👮‍♀️ but let's not forget about economic growth 💸 and addressing the root causes of extremism 💡. Can't just rely on security, need to tackle poverty & education too 🤝

I'm glad to see Mogadishu's transformation is happening! The new security measures are definitely a step in the right direction 🚶‍♂️. I mean, who wouldn't want to feel safe walking around their city again? 😊 But at the same time, it's also important to acknowledge that there's still a lot of work to be done. Like Soi said, "There's still much work to be done" 💼. It's all about finding that balance between security and economic growth. I'm not sure what the future holds for Mogadishu, but I hope these efforts will continue to pay off 🤞.

I'm glad to see that Mogadishu's streets are getting safer 😊. It's a big step towards rebuilding a city that was once too scary to visit. The new security measures are definitely making a difference, but I also think it's great that the authorities are working on addressing the root causes of extremism, like poverty and lack of education 🤝. If they can keep up the good work and support local initiatives, maybe we'll see some real progress soon 👍. It's not going to be easy, though - al-Shabab still has a big presence in Somalia 💔. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that all this effort will pay off for the people of Mogadishu 🤞.

🌟 The fact that Mogadishu's streets are now bustling with commerce and life after being so dangerous just a few years ago is seriously inspiring! 💪 Those security measures have clearly made a big difference, and I love how the government and security forces are working together to address the root causes of extremism. 🤝 It's all about creating jobs, reducing poverty, and promoting social cohesion - it makes total sense. And hey, even if the threat from al-Shabab is still out there, at least Mogadishu is on the path to stability and growth now! 🌈 The international support for these initiatives is also a huge win, because it shows that the world is behind Somalia's efforts to rebuild and thrive. So here's to a brighter future for Mogadishu - let's keep those positive vibes going! 💕

I'm so hyped to see Mogadishu thriving again 🤩! Those security measures might seem strict at first, but they're really making a difference. I mean, who would've thought that checkpoints and patrols could bring people together? It's amazing how much progress they've made in just a short time. And the initiatives they're implementing to address extremism are so on point 🌟 - job creation, poverty reduction, education... you get it! They're building bridges instead of walls.

It's not all sunshine and rainbows, though 🌫️. Al-Shabab is still out there, and it's a constant reminder that this isn't over yet. But I believe in the Somali people and their resilience 💪. If they can come together to rebuild and reclaim their city, anything is possible! It's like, we've seen so many stories of hope and determination around the world, and this one is definitely one for the books 📚.

omg u think checkpts r gonna make mogadishu safer lol? its just gonna create a culture of fear & mistrust among the citizens 😂 theres gotta b more 2 it than just security measures, like real economic opportunities 4 the people 2, not just jobs in the gov t 🤑

OMG 🤯 I'm so done with Al Jazeera's reporting style, always so serious and boring 😴. Can't they mix it up a bit? The fact that they're actually getting footage of people shopping on Mogadishu streets is a big deal, but do we really need to be reminded that the city is "on high alert"? 🚨 Can't they just report on the good stuff for once? 😊

OMG u guys, I'm literally super impressed with how far Mogadishu has come! 🤩 The security measures are def making a huge difference, and it's amazing to see the city coming alive again 💥. It's not gonna be easy tho, there's still that al-Shabab threat hanging over the city like a dark cloud ⛈️. But I'm loving the fact that they're focusing on job creation & education programs - let's get those young folks empowered & educated! 📚💼. And can we talk about how brave Al Jazeera reporter Catherine Soi is for going out there & reporting on it? 📰👏 She's like a true #HashtagHero, always shedding light on important issues 💡. Anywayz, fingers crossed that these initiatives will pay off & Mogadishu becomes an even safer, more prosperous city soon 🤞!

omg I'm so glad to see mogadishu making progress! those security measures can't come soon enough 🙏 after all the chaos that's been going on it's amazing to see the city coming alive again. but at the same time, I totally get why al shabab is still a concern - it's like, you can never really be too safe, right? 💔 anyway, I think it's awesome that they're trying all these initiatives to address extremism and poverty - job creation programs, education camps... it's all about building trust with the community and providing opportunities for people to thrive. fingers crossed that this approach works 🤞

I'm glad to see that Somalia's capital is getting some much-needed stability 🙏. I mean, who doesn't want to feel safe when walking down the street? 😊 The checkpoint thingy might seem like a hassle now, but if it means less bombings and shootings, then yeah, go for it! 💪 As long as they're addressing the root causes of extremism, which seems like what these initiatives are trying to do, I'm all for it 🤝. Can't say I'd want to live in Mogadishu with that threat hanging over you, though... 😬

I'm kinda surprised to see how much progress Mogadishu has made in terms of security, but at the same time, you can't just ignore the fact that there's still a major threat from al-Shabab 🤔. I mean, it's great that they're implementing job creation programs and poverty reduction efforts, because let's be real, if people are struggling to make ends meet, they're gonna be more susceptible to extremist ideologies.

I think what's really interesting is how the security measures are being implemented in a way that's not just about checkpoints and patrols, but also about building relationships with the community. It's all about trust and social cohesion, you know? Like, if people feel like the authorities care about their well-being, they're gonna be more likely to cooperate and report any suspicious activity.

It's also worth noting that this is a huge undertaking for Somalia, especially considering what they've been through in the past. I mean, 2006 was a long time ago, but it's clear that the impact of that insurgency is still being felt today. So, kudos to the security forces and local authorities for taking this on and trying to make a positive change.

But, as with anything, there are no guarantees here, right? It's gonna take time, effort, and resources to really start seeing some meaningful progress. And even then, you've gotta be prepared for setbacks and challenges along the way. Still, I'm optimistic about what's happening in Mogadishu – it's a huge step forward for the city, and who knows, maybe this is just the beginning of something amazing 🤞

OMG, u no its great 2 c somalia gettin back on thir feet lol!! 😂 theyre makin progress n all, but still got a lil issue w/ al-shabab 😬. i mean, its crazy how much safer the streets r now w/ checkpoints n patrols 🚨💪. ppl can actually go bout ther day2day life without 2 worry 2 much 😌. but u gotta feel 4 dem somalis, dey stil got a looong way 2 go 💔. i hope dey can get al-shabab outta thir lives n stuff 4 good 🤞. its all about jobz n edu n makin ppl feel safe 👍

idk if i buy this whole security thing... sounds like they're just placating ppl with checkpoints everywhere 🤔. how do we know these measures are actually addressing the root causes of extremism? what data is there to support that job creation programs and poverty reduction efforts are working? also, isn't it suspicious that international partners are still providing "ongoing support" after all these years? shouldn't they be pushing for actual sustainable solutions rather than just tossing around cash 💸.

🤔 I was reading about how safe Mogadishu is now and I gotta say its crazy how far they've come! 🚨 It's like you can walk down the street without worrying about getting caught in the crossfire or kidnapped 😓. They still got checkpoints everywhere tho, it's like a permanent police presence 💼. But on the bright side, all these new security measures are giving people hope that things will get better for them and their families 🌈. The problem is though, its hard to shake off the feeling that al-Shabab could pop up anywhere at any time 🕵️‍♀️. Still, it's a step in the right direction and I'm glad international partners are supporting them on this 💪

man, its cool to see mogadishu come a long way from what it was 20 yrs ago 😊. i think its awesome that they're putting in effort to create jobs and reduce poverty, thats def gonna help ppl feel safer and less drawn to extremist groups. but at the same time, u gotta keep an eye on al shabab, dey dont just magically disappear 💔. its all about balance, ur know? more checkpoints & patrols r fine, but also gotta make sure dey rnt just scaring ppl half to death 🤣. gotta work w/ locals 2 build trust & address the root causes of extremism, thats the key 🔓
