'We protect our kids': Parents and neighbors guard streets around Minneapolis schools amid ICE fears

OMG I'm so worried about these families, it's like they're living in a war zone already . Can't we just coexist peacefully? Like, ICE agents should be focusing on real crimes, not just random people walking down the street . And what's with all this fear and paranoia? Kids are already stressed out enough about school , do they really need to worry about getting 'detained' for being in the wrong place at the wrong time? It's like we're living in a dystopian novel or something .

IM FEELING SO BAD FOR THESE PARENTS AND KIDS IN MINNEAPOLIS!!!! IT'S LIKE THEY'RE LIVING IN A WAR ZONE, FIGHTING AGAINST ICE PERSONNEL ON THEIR OWN TURF . THE FACT THAT VOLUNTEERS ARE TAKING MATTERS INTO THEIR OWN HANDS IS JUST SAD - I GET IT, PEOPLE ARE FEARFUL AND WANT TO PROTECT THEMSELVES AND THEIR LOVED ONES .

BUT AT THE SAME TIME, IT'S AMAZING TO SEE COMMUNITY MEMBERS COMING TOGETHER AND LOOKING OUT FOR EACH OTHER . THESE PARENTS AREN'T JUST SITTING AROUND WAITING FOR SOMETHING TO HAPPEN, THEY'RE TAKING ACTION AND FIGHTING BACK IN THEIR OWN WAY . I HOPE THAT THE CITY OFFICIALS TAKE NOTE OF THIS AND START LISTENING TO THE CONCERNS OF THESE PARENTS AND KIDS .

AND WHAT'S WORSE IS THAT THIS KIND OF THING IS HAPPENING IN OTHER CITIES TOO . IT FEELS LIKE WE'RE LIVING IN A TIME WHERE FEAR AND INTIMIDATION ARE BEING USED AS TOOLS FOR CONTROL . BUT I KNOW THAT THERE ARE STILL GOOD PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO CARE ABOUT JUSTICE AND EQUITY , AND WE NEED MORE OF THEM NOW THAN EVER!

I'm getting a real sense of unease in this city right now. It's like everyone's on edge, worried that ICE agents will show up at school or on the streets. Parents are doing everything they can to keep their kids safe, and it's actually kind of inspiring to see them banding together like this. But at the same time, I'm scared for my own kid's future. What if this gets out of hand? We need some clear answers from our officials about what's going on here.

I've been noticing that a lot of these parents are worried about being reported or detained themselves because they're not citizens. It's just so unfair. They're doing everything in their power to be good members of this community, and now they're facing this kind of threat?

As someone who loves living here, it breaks my heart to see people feeling this way. We need to figure out a better way to address these issues without putting families in fear. Can we find a way to balance security with compassion and understanding? I hope so.

I'm really worried about this situation in Minneapolis . It's crazy that parents are having to take matters into their own hands just to keep their kids safe at school . I mean, who wants to send their kid to school with the fear of being detained or deported hanging over them? It's like they're walking on eggshells all day.

And what really gets me is that these parents are using walkie-talkies and Signal groups to stay safe . Like, I get it, but isn't there already a system in place for handling immigration issues at schools? Why do we need to have to create our own? It's just so... reactive.

I feel bad for the kids who are growing up in this environment . They shouldn't have to worry about their safety at school because of something that's not even their fault. And what's really concerning is when teachers and protesters get caught up in all this drama . Like, isn't education supposed to be the priority?

Anyway, I think it's awesome that there are community members like Greg who are stepping forward to look out for each other . We need more of that, not less .

I mean, I get why parents are worried, right? Their kids can't just walk around without knowing who's gonna be coming after them with a clipboard ... it's like, what even is the point of that kind of enforcement at schools?! Shouldn't we be focusing on educating our kids, not stressing 'em out about immigration stuff? I don't get why schools can't just have their own security teams or something, instead of relying on volunteers with walkie-talkies ... it's all just a bit too much for me .

OMG u guys its like 2025 & we r still dealing w/ this?? ICE agents @ schools?!?! Like whats next? Every1's getting all hyped about these community patrols tho its actually kinda cool that ppl are lookin out for each other. but omg the anxiety on kids rn is real their parents r right 2 b worried & it feels like we r takin a step back in some ways. schools should b safe spaces, not fear zones
