Wendy & Peter Pan review – sugar-rush spectacle with an awfully big hormonal hot-crush

Wendy & Peter Pan: A Sugar-Rush Spectacle That Falls Flat

Ella Hickson's feminist retelling of JM Barrie's timeless tale has been touted as a bold reimagining, but this Royal Shakespeare Company production from 2013 sadly fails to live up to its promise. The play's title, Wendy & Peter Pan, already hints at the revisionism that has taken place, and unfortunately, it's not enough to elevate this sugary-sweet spectacle.

Hannah Saxby shines as Wendy, a protagonist whose inner turmoil is curiously muted, veering wildly from self-doubt to impulsive decision-making. Her character's transformation into a "mother" figure to the Lost Boys feels contrived and unearned, particularly when she suddenly forges an alliance with Tink (Charlotte Mills) and Tiger Lily (Ami Tredrea). The latter's arrival is jarringly abrupt, disrupting the narrative's pacing.

Daniel Krikler's Peter Pan is equally perplexing. His character's inner crisis appears to be a hormonal hot-crush on Wendy, which strains credulity. It's baffling to see a boy who refuses to grow up struggling with adolescent desires, rather than simply remaining youthful and carefree.

The production's dazzling lights and video projections, designed by Taiki Ueda, create a visually stunning experience but also overwhelm the narrative at times. The aerial work and impressive physicality from Harrison Claxton as a roving crocodile are notable highlights. However, even these moments cannot redeem the play's overall lackluster pace.

The supporting cast fares better, with Toby Stephens delivering a memorable performance as the over-the-top Captain Hook. His character's pantomime-esque villainy is on full display, but even this cannot elevate the production's sense of authenticity.

In conclusion, Wendy & Peter Pan has become a theatrical monster that relies too heavily on spectacle rather than substance. Despite its ambitious retelling, the play feels like a shallow sugar rush, failing to hit the spot with its confusing character arcs and panto-esque moments.

I'm super disappointed in this reimagining of Peter Pan 🤔. I mean, it had all the ingredients for something amazing - a strong female lead, a fresh twist on the classic story... but somehow it just fell flat 😐. The pacing was all over the place and the character development was wonky too 📈. Daniel Krikler's Peter Pan was kinda ridiculous as a hormonal teenager 🤣 and I didn't buy it one bit.

And don't even get me started on how they used lights and video projections to distract from the storytelling 🎥. It felt like they were trying too hard to impress rather than focusing on what really mattered - the story itself 💡. Still, some of the aerial work was pretty cool 🌪️ and Toby Stephens as Captain Hook was a highlight 👏. Overall though, it was a bit of a letdown 😐.

Wow 🤯 I mean, Interesting... I went into this production thinking it was gonna be all about feminism and reimagining the classic tale, but honestly, it just felt like a bunch of cool visuals and some decent acting amidst a mess of convoluted plot points 😅 The aerial crocodile fight tho! 😮

idk what's wrong with this production 🤔 it seems like they were trying to make something new and interesting but ended up just making a mess of it 😳 the aerial work was lit tho 👀 i mean, who doesn't love watching crocodiles soar above the stage? 🐊 but seriously, peter pan is such an iconic character, u gotta get his personality right if u wanna do him justice 🤷‍♂️ and that performance by toby stephens as captain hook was on point 👏

I'm kinda disappointed by this RSC production of Wendy & Peter Pan 🤔. They promised a bold reimagining but it just ends up being a messy mix of sweet treats and not much else. I loved Hannah Saxby's performance as Wendy, she was on point, but the rest of the cast felt like they were playing catch-up. The pacing was all over the place, it was like they couldn't decide what kind of show they wanted to put on 📺. And don't even get me started on Peter Pan himself, his character arc just didn't make sense 🤷‍♂️. I do love a good spectacle though, so I can appreciate the visuals and aerial work, but it's just not enough to save this show from itself 😐.

oh noooo 😔 i was really looking forward to this one but it seems like it fell flat for u :( the aerial crocodile scenes tho 🎉🦖 and hannah saxby as wendy is def a plus 🤩 but overall i agree with the review, it's like they prioritized spectacle over storytelling sadly 💔

ugh I was so hyped for this production but it sounds like it totally missed the mark 🤔👎 Peter Pan is such an iconic character and it's a shame they didn't do him justice. I mean, Daniel Krikler's take on Pan just seems so weird and unearned. and the supporting cast is what really saves the show? that's a bummer 🤷‍♀️ but at least Toby Stephens as Hook is on point 🔥 maybe they should've stuck to his strengths and not tried to reinvent the whole story? 😐

u no why they keep reimagining peter pan?? like it's not even about pixie dust n stuff anymore lolol they're trying too hard 2 make it 'relevant' 4 modern audiences but honestly, wendy & peter pan just feels like a watered-down version of the original tale 🤷‍♀️ i mean, where's the depth in peter's character?? he's supposed 2 be this iconic boy who refuses 2 grow up but here he's just some dude with an identity crisis 😂 and don't even get me started on wendy's transformation into a 'mother' figure 🙄 it's like they took every empowering female trope and mashed them all together without thinking it through 💁‍♀️

I'm still trying to figure out what's more concerning – the fact that this production of Wendy & Peter Pan relied too much on flashy lights and video projections or the lack of substance in the storytelling itself 🤔. I mean, think about it, if you're gonna retell a classic tale like this, shouldn't you be exploring deeper themes and character complexities? It's like our politicians always saying they want to "unite" us, but when it comes down to it, they just wanna distract us with flashy rhetoric 📺. I'm calling it now – this production was all about the spectacle, not substance. We need more productions that focus on nuanced storytelling and character development, not just a sugar rush of visuals 🎨.

I'm so meh about this new production of Wendy & Peter Pan 🤔🎭 I mean, I love a good spectacle as much as the next person, but this one just fell flat for me. The RSC is known for its amazing work, but this one's got some major issues 🤦‍♀️ Hannah Saxby was decent as Wendy, but her character felt kinda... off. Like, she went from being super anxious to suddenly becoming a "mother" figure to the Lost Boys? It was like they threw that in there just 'cause it sounded cool 💁‍♀️ And don't even get me started on Peter Pan's weird crush on Wendy 🤣 I mean, come on guys, can't he just be a carefree kid or something?

The visuals were pretty sick though 👀 especially the lights and video projections. But at times, they felt like too much - it was like the play was trying to outdo itself rather than telling a solid story 🎬 The aerial work was awesome tho! 🤩 And Toby Stephens as Captain Hook was on point 😂. I wish they'd focused more on developing the characters and less on flashy special effects, you know?

omg i was so hyped for this production but i gotta agree w/ the reviewer it just didnt deliver 🤔🎭 the aerial crocodile fight tho was INSANE 🌪️ harrison claxton is a total talent can't save the show from its pacing issues tho 😩 toby stephens as captain hook though 👊 need more of that! 🙌

I'm not sure what's going on with this production... I mean, the special effects are insane 🤯, but it feels like they're distracting from the actual story? Like, Wendy's supposed to be a strong female lead, but she just seems kinda meh 😐. And Peter Pan's inner crisis? Come on, that's not how puberty works 👦. I need to see some evidence of this hormonal hot-crush or whatever before I believe it. Where's the proof? 🤔

ugh i was just thinking about trying a new coffee shop downtown 🤔 it's supposed to be super trendy but idk if it lives up to the hype... i mean have you ever tried that new cold brew they're serving? apparently it's life changing... anyway, back to wendy & peter pan lol what's with all the fuss about the title? like isn't peter pan already a pretty iconic character? 🤷‍♀️

🤔 "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke 😐 The RSC's attempt at reimagining Peter Pan has fallen short, relying too heavily on flashy visuals instead of a strong narrative. It's like trying to add sprinkles to a cake without actually baking it 🍰👎

Omg this production sounds so meh idk why it was hyped up lol but i mean Hannah Saxby as Wendy is def a highlight she's so pretty and talented 🌸🎭 and Toby Stephens as Captain Hook is amazing he brings that whole drama queen vibe which is much needed in the play 🤣👏 but overall i agree with u it feels like they prioritized visuals over storytelling which is such a bummer 😔

I'm so underwhelmed by this production of Wendy & Peter Pan 🤷‍♀️. I mean, you gotta admire their attempt at giving it a feminist twist, but honestly, it just doesn't quite land 😐. The pacing is all over the place and the characters feel more like caricatures than actual people 🤣. And don't even get me started on Peter's weird love crisis - like, dude, you're Pan, not some hormonal teenager 💁‍♂️! The visuals are pretty cool I guess, but they can't make up for the lack of substance in this story 🎥💔

I'm still thinking about this production... I mean, I was really looking forward to it 🤔. I thought the video projections were crazy cool, but honestly, they kinda overpowered everything else on stage. And don't even get me started on how weird Peter's character felt - like, dude, you're a boy who refuses to grow up and yet he's dealing with adolescent drama? 🙄 it didn't add up for me.

And what's up with Wendy's transformation into this "mother" figure? I felt so lost watching her just kinda flip between being a kid and an adult without any real explanation. It was like they took all the emotional depth from the original story and replaced it with... sparkles 💡

The supporting cast was definitely the highlight for me - Toby Stephens as Captain Hook was SO on point, but even his character couldn't make up for the production's overall lackluster pace 🙅‍♂️ I'm still trying to figure out what went wrong here

🤔 I mean, I'm kinda disappointed by this production of Wendy & Peter Pan. The whole thing felt like it was more about looking good than actually telling a compelling story 📺. Hannah Saxby's performance as Wendy was alright, but her character just didn't feel very developed 🙅‍♀️. And what's up with Peter Pan's love crisis? It's so weird to see him struggling with being young and carefree 😒. I think the production did some cool stuff with the lights and video projections, though 💡. The aerial crocodile stunts were pretty impressive 🤸‍♂️! But overall, it just didn't live up to its potential for me 📉.

I'm totally underwhelmed by this production of Wendy & Peter Pan 🤔🎭. I mean, it's got some pretty cool special effects and all, but when it comes down to it, the story just doesn't feel like a strong feminist retelling. It's like they took some basic ideas from the original and just...meh 😐. And don't even get me started on how confusing the characters are 🙄. I loved the aerial work by Harrison Claxton tho! 🤩 Maybe next time they'll focus more on storytelling over spectacle? 🤞

I'm still underwhelmed by this adaptation 🤔. The whole "Wendy & Peter Pan" thing just feels like a gimmick to me - like they took a classic tale and tried to make it into something edgy but ended up with a mess. I mean, who writes a play where Peter's inner crisis is basically a hormonal crush on Wendy? 🙄 And what's up with the Lost Boys being introduced out of nowhere? It just disrupts the whole vibe of the story...
